Abstract

A granular fire protection material, particle size 0.2 to 20 mm, is produced by spraying drops on an extrusion of a soln. of an alkali silicate-H2O mixt. opt. contg. agents to raise the surface tension, with an H2O content of 45-90 wt.% onto a base, heating to between 40 and 100 degrees C to reduce water content to 10-40 wt.%, and then cooling. Opt. after cooling, the material can be coated in a final step. Pref. the fire protection material is produced continuously by dropping onto a continuously moving base. The material is used for fire protection in buildings. The action of heat on the material forms a solid, non-combustible, heat-insulating foam. The process provides a sprayable, loose material conveniently used in irregularly formed spaces.
