Abstract

Glossy coatings are continuously generated on the surface of sheet or film supports by applying a hardenable polymeric coating composition directly to the support or to a gloss flexible film and maintaining the coated face in contact with the glossy flexible film while the coating is laminated to the support layer and hardened by suitable irradiation. The glossy film is separated from the hard coated surface for re-use. Suitable for applying a glossy varnish to supports of paper, film, metallic sheet of foil etc. The contacting film generates a higher gloss than is usually obtained from coatings cast or spread with a free exposed surface. Provides a continuous short cycle polishing technique and high throughput rates (no data). The glossy film is of polyamide or polyolefin film travelling between storage and take-up reels or in a continuous loop. The covered coating is cured by electron bombardment or by UV, radiofrequency or microwave irradiation.
