Abstract

A vulcanisable, fluorinated elastomer which is a copolymer contg. (A) 4-15 wt. % tetrafluoroethylene, (B) 48-65 wt. % vinylidene fluoride, (C) 8-23 wt. % hexafluoropropylene, and (D) 10-17 wt. % perfluoro-(1-5C) alkyl-perfluorovinyl ether, pref. perfluoromethyl-perfluorovinyl ether is prepd. pref. by radical polymerisation in emulsion. Components A,B,C and D are polymerised in emulsion at 50-130 degrees C and 7-140 pref. 35-100 kg/cm2 press. in the presence of an inert gas and a free radical initiator. The polymerisation can be continuous, the reaction mixt. remaining in the reactor for about 5-30 min. The copolymer is isolated from the resulting latex by e.g. coagulation and filtration, and then dried. The amt. of the costly component Din the elastomer of the addition is reduced from the 17-30 wt. % used in the elastomer of the parent patent, without adversely affecting its qualities. It is readily vulcanised to give prods. used e.g. for films, joints, rings, washers, which have good flexibility at low temp., and good resistance to heat and solvents.
