Abstract
The joining faces of the two pipes have annular grooves of the same dia. At the bottom of each groove is an inflatable ring which can be inflated from the exterior of the pipe, and on this ring is positioned a sealing ring which will slide axially in the groove. Applying pressure to the inflatable tubes, the seals move out of the grooves and one which has a 'T' form enters the other which has a 'U' form and seals the joint. All rings are positioned in grooves before submersion. The 'T' seal can be equipped with cutting knives to cut through the base of the 'U' seal and the inflatable ring, the seepage of hydraulic fluid under pressure diving a better seal between the two rings.
