Abstract

New cpds of formula (I): (where R is acyl; X is H, acyloxy, a heterocyclic ring (pref. pyridine), alkoxy, thioalkoxyl, thioalkyl, or any other gp. with known pharmacologically favourable activity) are pref prepd by (a) rearrangement of the corresp. acetoxymethyl 6-acylaminopenicillanate sulphoxide at high temp. in the presence of a catalyst (esp. acetic anhydride) or (b) reacting the corresp. 7-acylamino-3-CH2X-ceph-3-em-4-carboxylic acid with chloro- or bromomethyl acetate in the presence of a base (esp. a tert. amine).
