Abstract

Heat and sound insulating material consists of a cast set and hardened material made up from a mixt. of a liq. alkali silicate, pref. a silicate soln. having a concn. of 25-60 degrees Baume in which the alkali oxide/SiO2 wt. ratio is 1:1 - 1:1.5 plus sufficient silicate hardener to transform the alkali oxide in it into a less soluble form and at the same time to precipitate the SiO2 as insoluble SiO2, plus 0.05-1 wt.% of the silicate contents of a foaming agent effective in an alkali medium and consisting pref. of a fatty acid with 12-22C plug 10-75 wt.% of the total dry wt. of the mass of >=1 exfoliated vermiculite and foamed perlite. A fibre reinforcing material may be opt. added. The material is useful in the building industry.
