Abstract
A birefringent device is described in Parent Patent includes >=2 transparent plastic, e.g. Araldite (RTM) and phthalic or maleic anhydride, which are slidable adjacent each other and which are constrained by a presser frame assembly to take up a curved (e.g. semi-cylindrical) configuration. Relative movement of the chips varies the degree of diffraction of light passing through the two chips. In the improvement the chips are pre-formed into the curved configuration (e.g. by moulding or heating and bending) to reduce the cost of the frame for supporting the chips and to stabilize the stresses in the chips.
