Abstract

In a membrane filtration plant a membrane filter is connected into a piping system whose upstream side delivers the medium to be filtered to the filter and whose downstream side removes from the filter partly "retentate" (medium which does not pass through the filter) and partly "permeate" (which has passed through the filter). According to the claim the upstream pipework incorporates a feed pump for the medium to be filtered, which has, as well as an independent power source, such as an electric motor, a hydraulic motor which is connected into the downstream side pipework so that the pump can be partly driven by retentate from the filter. The relative amts. of power derived from the independent power source and the hydraulic pump are controlled by signals from a pressure sensor connected into the working side of the pipework for the retentate. The filtration plant is used for the desalination of sea water, concn. of protein in milk etc.
