Sulphoethyl betaines of formula Y+ -CR4R5-CHR6-SO2O - (where Y is NR1R2R3, (a); R1-3 are opt. substd. opt. heteroatom-contg. hydrocarbyl (aliphatic, cyclic, (un)satd. aromatic or heterocyclic), or R1 and R3 form a ring, or R2 and R3 are replaced by a C=N or N=N bond in a ring; cyclic gps. in (b) and (c) comprise 3-8 membered ring(s); and R4-6 are H, monovalent gps. such as R1-3 or non-C-gps., or R4 and R6 form a ring), useful as surfactants, phytosanitary prods. and starting matls for org. syntheses, are prepd. by reacting amine Y with (R4)(R5)C=C(R6)(SO3R7) in presence of an org. or mineral acid (or its salt with Y).
