Polyurethane solns. are prepd. by reaction in solvent of a bifunctional urethane prepolymer (I) with terminal NCO gps. with the reactive H-atoms of a bifunctional chain lengthening agent (II) where x, the ratio of addn. of (I) being the % molar proportion of (I) added at a given moment to the total amt. of (II) added and y, the ratio of addn. of (II) being the % molar proportion of (II) to be added in the time interval between start of the addn. of (II) and 90% addn. satisfy x + 35 >=y >=100X/95 The control of the chain lengthening reaction gives solns. with improved shelf life suitable for moulded products, filaments, films and coatings.
