Abstract

Diisobutylene (I) is separated from a mixture contg. hydrocarbons, t-BuOH and H2O by (a) adjusting conc. of H2O and BuOH (pref. by washing with and/or addition of H2O or BuOH/H2O) to x and y respectively (where, in wt. pts. x 16.6 and y >3.63x per 100 pts. (I)), (b) disllation of the ternary azeotrope (I)/BuOH/H2O and the binary azeotrope (I)/BuOH, (c) water-washing of the distillate and (d) separation of (I) (esp. by flash distillation). Diisobutylenes are used as high octane fuels, after hydrogenation as aviation fuels and after modification as antioxidants, lubricant additives, plastifiers and monomers.
