Abstract

Tolanes of formula viz. p,p'-disubstd. di-phenyl- acetylene where one of R and R' = alkyl and the other is alkoxy, the sum of their C atoms being >=2, and pref. 4-12, or both R and R' = alkyl or alkoxy with the sum of their C atoms being >=9 are prepd. by dehydrohalogenation of the corresp. p,p'-substd. diphenyl halogen-ethylene of formula specif. by heating with K t-butylate. Prods. are used as solvents for polarising filters and anisotropic solvents for optical and NMR spectroscopy.
