Abstract

Sensitised silver halides in the form of photographic emulsions contain colloidal selenium as the only sensitiser. The sensitiser is pref. a synergistic mixture of colloidal selenium and a reducing agent, which may be a thiol, selenol, disulphide, sulphinic or selenic acid and their salts, phosphines, sulphites, hydroquinone or ascorbic acid. Suitable reducing agents are of formula- R - X - X' - R' (where R' and R are aryl or alkyl, and X and X' are S or Se) e.g. diphenyl disulphide or diphenyldiselenide; or R2XOOM (where R2 is aryl or alkyl, X is S or Se, and M is H or alkali metal), e.g. sodium p-toluenesulphinate or p-acetamido-phenylsulphinic acid; or PR3R4R5 (where R3, R4 and R5 are aryl or carboxyalkyl) e.g. diphenyl-carboxyethylphosphine.
