Abstract

Bronze, heat absorbing glasses with compositions falling in two groups, expressed in wt %:- (1) SiO2 70 to 73; Al2O3 0.2 to 2.0; CaO 6.5 to 12.5; MgO 1.0 to 4.5; Na2O + K2O 12.0 to 16.0; Fe2O3 0.2 to 1.0; CoO 0.003 to 0.006; NiO 0.0008 to 0.0028; Se 0.0015 to 0.0030. (II) SiO2 60 to 75; Al2O3 0.1 to 5.0; CaO 6 to 16; MgO 0.5 to 9.0 (CaO + MgO = 6.5to 17); Na2O + K2O 11 to 20; Fe2O3 0.2 to 1.0; CoO 0.0030 to 0.0060; NiO 0.0008 to 0.0028; Se 0.0015 to 0.0030. The glasses have a dominant transmission between 575-585 nm, an excitation purity of 7-14% and transmit less than 50% of solar energy. The use of nickel permits a reduction in the amount of Se employed. The glasses are used for general architectural purposes and have a pleasnt, warm colour.
