Abstract

Tablets are prepared by triturating, in the presence of moisture, a powder containing two separate ingredients which react together in the presence of water to produce a gas, with a volatile organic solvent in which at least one constituent of the powder is soluble, moulding the resultant mass into tablet form, and then drying the tablet. Preferred gas-forming ingredients are carbonates or bicarbonates (e.g. of Na, K or Li) with a water-soluble carboxylic acid (e.g. citric, tartaric, maleic, fumaric, succinic, adipic, itaconic or tricarballylic acid). The organic solvent may be ethanol, 2-propanol, chloroform, 1-butanol or acetone, or mixtures of these. The proportion of solvent used is generally about 3 to 40 mls. per 100 gms. of mixed powdered ingredients, and it may contain up to 10%, preferably 0.05 to 3% by weight of water. A pharmaceutical tablet of the invention, containing aspirin and monocalcium phosphate, is prepared. Example 7 describes an effervescent disinfectant tablet containing cetyl pyridinium chloride.
