Abstract

A process for the production of #-methylmercaptopropionaldehyde comprises reacting in the presence of a catalyst, methyl mercaptan and acrolein, the acrolein being present as a solution comprising acrolein, water and at least one carbonyl compound which is an aliphatic saturated aldehyde or ketone, which solution is free from unsaturated organic acids.
