Abstract
A switch suitable, for example, for controlling a vehicle automatic gear change, of the kind comprising an " S "-shaped flexible blade S coupled at X to a speed-responsive member (P, Figs. 1 and 2, not shown) driven by eddycurrent drag from a rotating magnet (A), and wherein the blade S is thus snapped between two fixed contacts B and B1 at two different vehicle speeds, is characterized in that the vehicle speed at which the snap action occurs in one direction is adjustable by adjustment of the position of one fixed contact. The adjustable contact is carried on, or moved by (Fig. 4, not shown), a spring-urged lever L which also acts as an armature of an electromagnet E the current through which is controlled, for example, by a rheostat or switch operated by the accelerator pedal. In the embodiment of Fig. 5 (not shown), a single speed-responsive member P is coupled to two such " S "" blade arrangements to provide two respective gear changes. If the accelerator pedal is depressed beyond its normal travel the adjustable contact may move the blade S over dead centre to effect a quicker change of gear. Instead of an electromagnet to control lever L a pneumatic, hydraulic, or simple mechanical linkage may be used.
