Abstract

A delayed coking process comprising: (a) heating a petroleum residue feed, in a first heating zone, to a temperature that is below coking temperatures but at a temperature where the residue is a liquid pumpable; (b) leading said heated residue to a second heating zone where it is heated to coking temperatures, (c) leading said heated petroleum residue from said second heating zone to a coding zone where products are collected in the form of vapor at the top and a spherical coke product is formed which is substantially free flowing; and (d) introducing into said petroleum residue from 300 to 3,000 wppm of at least one polymeric additive selected from a poly(oxyethylene), a poly(oxypropylene), a poly(oxyethylene)-poly(oxypropylene) copolymer , a tetra-alkoxylated ethylenediamine alcohol of a poly(oxyethylene) alcohol, a tetra-alkoxylated ethylenediamine alcohol of a poly(oxypropylene) alcohol, a tetra-alkoxylated ethylenediamine alcohol of poly(oxypropylene)-poly(oxyethylene) alcohols, and having a weight molecular weight of 1,000 to 30,000, in an amount that is effective for the formation of a substantially free-flowing spherical coke, wherein said polymeric additive is introduced into said petroleum residue at a location upstream of the second heating zone, between said second heating zone and said coking zone or at both locations.
