Specifically, a switching determination parameter for switching from low air fuel ratio combustion into high air fuel ratio combustion is made to be a required fuel injection amount (eqgov), which is an amount of fuel injected into the combustion chamber corresponding to an engine load required by a driver. A switching determination parameter for switching from the high air fuel ratio combustion into the low air fuel ratio combustion is made to be an actual fuel injection amount (eqfin), which is an amount of fuel injected into the combustion chamber upon each fuel injection.
