Description

Domaine de 1 inventionField of invention

The invention relates to methods for preventing the fraudulent reproduction of authentic documents, such as identity documents, banknotes, credit cards, etc.

The invention more particularly relates to affixing a "latent image" to the surface of such documents.

In the printing sector, the term "latent image" means an image that can not be detected under "normal" observation conditions, that is to say when the document carrying such a latent image is observed under an angle perpendicular to its surface, while latent images only appear when the document is viewed from a defined angle.

In printing, this effect is obtained by printing regular reliefs, obtained in particular by a support structure in light relief (printing intaglio). The latent image appears by a simple parallax effect when the reliefs are observed from a point located near their axis of extension (or perpendicular to it).

One of the advantages of these latent images is that it is impossible to reproduce them from a simple copy (by photocopy or by electronic scanning) of an authentic document.

État de la techniqueState of the art

Many processes have already emerged to achieve this latent image effect. As mentioned above, you can use the intaglio to mark reliefs on the document support.

US 5,199,744 describes a method where the reliefs are made by embossing.

US5,582,103 and US 4,033,059 describe a method in which a support is marked with reliefs of which either the raised portions or the lowered portions are then printed.

All these processes from the simplest to the most complex present a disadvantage from the point of view of the development of the relief required to obtain the latent image effect. The realization of this relief implies in fact at least one operation with stamping, and moreover a perfect alignment of the inking with the reliefs produced.

Résumé de l'inventionSummary of the invention

It has been sought to provide a method for producing the reliefs necessary for the production of a latent image on any support.

The object of the invention is that the image obtained is impossible to reproduce.

Another object of the invention is that the method is simple to implement.

The object of the invention is a relief printing method, among other things for the printing of latent images, on a document, which comprises the following operations:
  1. a) select a substrate
  2. b) selecting an ink containing a polymerizable material and a polymerization accelerator
  3. c) select a printing process for the transfer of ink in a thick layer
  4. d) printing at least one pattern of spaced lines extending along at least one preferential axis with this ink using this method
  5. e) activate the polymerization accelerator by an ad hoc energy supply to polymerize the ink in a thick layer

According to an advantageous embodiment, the pattern comprises an area comprising a first network of lines extending along a preferred axis and at least a second zone comprising a second network of lines extending along an axis different from the preferred axis, to produce a latent image on the document.

In this method, operation b can be preceded by a preliminary printing. According to an alternative embodiment, the operation b may also be preceded by the apposition of a preliminary element such as a hologram.

The printing process is preferably selected from the following methods: screen printing, flexography, gravure printing.

Advantageously, the polymerization accelerator is activated by an energy supply by electromagnetic radiation, selected from the following: infrared, UV, microwave.

Other features and advantages of the invention will emerge from the following description of particular embodiments of the invention, reference being made to the appended drawings in which:
  • The Fig. 1 is a perspective view, with exaggerated dimensions, of a printed substrate according to the method of the invention.

The Fig. 1 shows how the method of the invention makes it possible to produce a conventional latent image.

A second pattern B, also consisting of spaced lines 3 is carried on the same substrate.

Les lignes en relief 3 s'étendent suivant un autre axe préférentielle β, nettement différencié de α, voire perpendiculaire à celui ci.The raised lines 3 extend along another preferred axis β, clearly differentiated from α, or even perpendicular thereto.

Le phénomène s'inverse évidemment lorsque le document est regardé suivant l'autre axe préférentiel β.By parallax effect, an observer looking at the document along the preferred axis α will experience the impression that the pattern A is less dense than the pattern B. The interval e between two lines 1 indeed appears in all its width (typically the interval e has a width of the order of 0.1 to 0.2 mm, of the same order as the width of the lines 1 and 3), while it is partially hidden between the lines 3. The phenomenon s' obviously inverse when the document is viewed along the other preferential axis β.

To obtain the particular relief of the device of the invention, an ink containing, in addition to the pigments and a certain quantity of solvents, polymerizable materials ("varnishes", monomers), which are deposited on the appropriate substrate using a printing process for the transfer of a thick ink layer and the use of large pigments.

These methods include, typically, screen printing, flexography and gravure printing.

The current practice in printing is that, in order to obtain the maximum optical effect of the pigments dispersed in the ink, the ink layer is as thin as possible, and therefore practically two-dimensional. A thin layer also, in general, has the advantage of better adhesion to the support.

This result is generally obtained by conventional drying.

Quite the opposite of this practice, in the process of the invention, a brief drying with intense energy supply is carried out so as to obtain an almost instantaneous polymerization of the ink layer, practically without any reduction in volume. As a result, 1.3 lines with three-dimensional extension (of the order of ten μm) are obtained. This energy supply can be achieved in particular by raising the temperature, electromagnetic radiation, electron beam.

Furthermore, the relief patterns A and B can be made over a conventional printed pattern, or even on a piece of data authenticating the document, such as a holographic image, which, by its very presence (even if it is a coarse fake) may be enough for an observer who pays little heed to the authenticity of a document. Note that the method of the invention also allows identification and authentication of the document by the touch, the relief giving the document a distinct tactile sensation.
