Definitions
- the present invention relates to a blank intended to be transported from a place of production to a place of use where it is stored more or less long before to be used, i.e. put into volume and then closed after receiving objects to wrap. It is therefore a blank intended to be used by a non-professional user packaging, folded, filled and closed by hand for unitary use, as and when needs encountered by individuals or by employees in shops, post offices or shops of courier companies, etc.
- the problem which the invention solves is not that of packaging. mechanical, in factories or workshops where packaging operations are carried out the chain, on automatic multi-station machines, connected by transfer such as continuous conveyors, because the blanks used are designed for a automatic processing from the sample, one by one, from a stack, to the closing with immediate setting glue, after setting in volume in conformers, filling and grouping for the introduction of a plurality of full and closed containers on handling pallets or in crates cardboard.
- the finished container has a fixed, invariable volume, or on the contrary has a adjustable perimeter thanks to which the volume of the container adapts to that of the articles to wrap.
- the first case it is a box and in the second case it is a envelope or case.
- the mechanical closure of a folded container is obtained by means attached, outside the container itself: glue, adhesive tape, strip and others ties, heat-sealable plastic sheet and the like.
- the elements must not directly joined by the adhesive, are designed to leave no cracks and have no weaknesses such as, for example, signs likely to be fraudulently extracted by unfolding then reinserted by sliding after having released a passage between the interior and the exterior.
- the containers produced by folding in volume of a blank according to the invention are therefore more or less complex and advanced but still have a simple closure and inviolable.

- Figure 53 is a schematic view of the finished container, filled and closed, as it stands present for his expedition.
- FIG. 54 is a schematic view of a blank according to the invention intended for constitute a blank which, after setting in volume, must form a container of the known type under the name of "American case” and having the necessary elements so that the container can be fully assembled, kept in volume and closed without organs exterior such as glue, staples or strapping.
- FIG. 60 is a schematic view of a blank according to the invention intended for constitute a blank which, after setting in volume, must form a container of the known type under the name of "American box" and having a common type bottom, the height of the container being adjustable according to the content.
- Figure 61 is a schematic view of an American box obtained from a blank not shown but similar to that of Figure 55, itself from the draft of the Figure 50, the bottom of which is closed and which is being closed at a height lower than its maximum.
- Figures 1 to 4 illustrate the general principle of the invention when a cardboard blank corrugated cut and creased (and possibly printed) has been folded to form volume a container body 1 and a closure panel 2.
- the body 1 can be of different types, as some examples are described more far away, and in FIG. 1, a body 1 has voluntarily been shown without any detail, thereby showing that this body 1 can be any, except that it must have a bottom, or base 3, two transverse walls, of which only one 4 is visible, and two side walls 5 and 6 adjacent to the transverse wall 4.
- the closure panel 2 is secured to a strip 7 on either side of which is find two tabs 8 and 9 holding on to the strip 7 by fold lines 10 and 11.
- the internal face of the strip 7 and the legs 8 and 9 carries a wide line of adhesive 12 shown in dotted lines.
- the closure panel 2 After having set the body 1 in volume, the closure panel 2 is folded down, then apply the strip 3 against the outside face of the transverse wall 4 and fold tabs 8 and 9 on the outer face of the side walls 5 and 6 respectively, the adhesive 12 bringing together in a single line the three adjacent walls 5, 4 and 6 and thus making the tamper-evident container, except by tearing off or tearing, which would be immediately visible and would reveal fraud. Accidental opening is excluded.
- the legs 8 and 9 can be longer than those shown and, in particular, have the same surface that the walls 5 and 6 themselves which they then completely cover.
- FIG. 5 an example of a cut and creased corrugated cardboard blank has been shown. which meets the tamper-evident closure requirements described above.
- the blank has panels 15 and 16 connected to the closure panel 2 by fold lines 17 and 18 located in the extension of fold lines 10 and 11, as well as flaps 20 - 21 and 22 - 23 holding respectively to the side walls 5 and 6 by lines of transverse folding 24 and 25.
- the closure panel 2 is connected to a transverse wall 4 a by a transverse fold line 26.
- the transverse wall 4 b carries an end panel 27 which is determined by a double fold line 28 and which carries two tongues 30 and 31, while the base 3 is passed through two slots 32 and 33.
- the adhesive 12 is of the prolonged effect type, that is to say that it retains long stickiness so it can be used long after it has been applied to the strip 7 and the legs 8 and 9, which requires covering it with a ribbon of protection 34, commonly made of silicone paper or synthetic material including one face at least is weakly adherent, to allow the user to easily remove this tape when he wants to use the adhesive.
- Figure 6 explains how a user manually creates a container in volume from the blank in Figure 5 which is delivered flat:
- the side walls 5 and 6 are straightened along fold lines 35 and 36 located in the extension of lines 10 - 17 and 11 - 18, and fold inwards, opposite the from each other, flaps 20, 21, 22 and 23, then straighten the end panel 27 fold over the flaps 21 and 23, against their inner face, until the tongues 30 and 31 lock in the slots 32 and 33, which immobilizes the flaps 21 and 23 as well as the walls 5 and 6, making the body 1 and, in particular, the base 3 stable.
- the user can then manually place the objects to be packed on the base 3 using both hands since body 1 is stable.
- lining panels 15 and 16 are placed outside but it is also possible to arrange them inside the side walls 5 and 6, although it is a less convenient solution for closing the container, because the objects already placed on base 3 may constitute a gene for internal placement.
- this provision leaves two slots at the top of the containing, between each side wall and its interior lining panel, a slot which does not not allow access to the interior of the container but which can be the source attachment and incidents when handling the container, when it is shipped by post or courier, because a thin envelope can slip into it.
- the lining panels 15 and 16 placed externally give the container a complete inviolability as this leaves no passage between the exterior and inside, not even a slit since all the intervals are hidden, while elements of the blank are not joined together (neither by gluing, nor by stapling, nor by partitions folded into bellows, etc.) other than by fold lines constituting, after setting in volume, the edges of the parallelepiped container.
- Figures 7 to 11 illustrate another embodiment in which the blank fits in a quadrilateral that does not create any waste when it is cut.
- the blank has, from the top of FIG. 7, the strip 7 and its legs 8 and 9, a closure panel 41, a transverse wall 42, a bottom 43 and a second wall transverse 44, these elements being integral and separated by fold lines 45.46, 47 and 48.
- the fold lines 10 and 11 extend over the entire length of the blank and determine security flaps 51 and 52, lining panels 53 and 54, flaps 55 and 56 and the side walls 5 and 6.
- the container is finished by folding down the closure panel 41 and, laterally, the security flaps 51 and 52 then, after removal of the protective tape 34, positioning and bonding of the strip 7 and the legs 8 and 9.
- the finished container is then presented as in FIG. 11.
- the only adhesive 12 applied in a single straight line keeps the container in volume and closed inviolably.
- Figures 12 to 15 show an embodiment similar to that of Figures 1 to 6.
- Figure 14 shows the positioning of the lining panels 15 and 16 and their fixing by lugs 8 and 9.
- the panels lining 15 and 16 are pressed against the side walls 5 and 6 to which they adhere firmly, so you can no longer lift them.
- the strips are formed by the lining panels 15 and 16 which are integral legs 8 and 9, which are separated from the previous strip 7, which does not constitute more than a panel attached to the cover 2.
- the long-acting adhesive 12 and its protective tape are arranged longitudinally, near the free edges of the lining panels 15 and 16, in two simple lines.
- the body of the box mounts in the same way as that of Figures 12 to 15 but as for the cover, we remove the two protective tapes 34, then straightens the transverse wall 4 a and the cover 2 before the panels lining 15 and 16, then fold the panel 7 against the transverse wall 4 b , then fold the two lining panels 15 and 16 against the side walls 5 and 6 to which they are fixed by means of the adhesive 12 unmasked during removal of the protective tape 34, and finally the two tabs 8 and 9 are brought back against the panel 7 to which they are also fixed by the adhesive 12.
- the finished container has a facade whose part central is formed by the panel 7 and two lateral parts formed by the legs 8 and 9 superimposed on panel 7.
- the adhesive 12 of the flaps 20-21 and 22-23 allows to mount the body of the box and to keep upright before placing the objects to be packed and, of course, before close the cover, as shown in Figures 21 and 22.
- FIG. 21 a variant is shown according to which the protective tape 34 is removed from the four flaps 21, 22, 23 and 24 and they are all applied outside the body of the container, namely outside the the transverse wall 4 a for the flaps 20 and 22, and on the transverse wall 4 b for the flaps 21 and 23.
- This operation is simple to perform on the machine, automatically immediately after removal tape 34.
- FIG. 22 shows another variant according to which the ribbon 34 is neither removed from the walls 5 and 6, nor from the flaps 20 and 22 and the latter is folded before straightening the transverse wall 4 a , so that they are inside the container body and not outside.
- the finished and closed container is according to figure 24 or figure 25.
- the adhesive 12 and its protective tape 34 are arranged only on two opposite longitudinal sides of the cover.
- this adhesive 12 and its tape protection 34 are arranged on two opposite longitudinal sides of the cover and the container body.
- the adhesive 12 and its protective tape 34 are arranged, during factory production, on the two longitudinal sides of the cover and only on flaps 21 and 23 of the body.
- the blank is set up by first constituting the body by straightening the side walls 5 and 6 and the transverse wall 4 b , then removing the protective tape 34 from the flaps 21 and 23 and folding them to bring against the outer face of the wall 4b ( Figure 27) where they are fixed with the adhesive 12 of these components.
- the user therefore does not need to maintain the body of the container to take care of the objects to be wrapped because this body is freestanding.
- Figure 29 shows the finished container, ready for shipment.
- the removal of the flap 27 provides a saving of material first but it also avoids falls whose surface is added to that, direct, of panel 27.
- the cutting tool is simplified because two neighboring blanks can be determined by cutting a sheet of corrugated cardboard into a single line, and as they all have a simple rectangle outline, cutting them does not create any fall if we correctly calculate the dimensions of the plate in which we cut a plurality of blanks.
- Figures 30 to 34 show an embodiment which differs from those which have been previously described by the fact that the blank comes from a blank folded on itself, so that the blank is always delivered flat but has a double thickness.
- the fold lines 10 and 11 are continuous from the edge of the strip 7 to the outer edges of the flaps 21 and 23 and show no cutout separation of flaps 20 to 23.
- flaps are each marked with an oblique row of lines 60, 61, 62 and 63 respectively which determines for each flap two triangular parts, one of which receives glue 64, just before the blank is folded back on itself according to the lines 10 and 11, so that the flaps 20 and 22 are made integral with the transverse wall 4 a and that the flaps 21 and 23 are made integral with the transverse wall 4 b .
- FIG. 31 we see how the blank looks after folding the blank and bonding of flaps 20 to 23. However, so that the blank occupies less surface during its transport and its storage, the tab 8 and the lining panel 15 on the one hand, the tab 9 and the lining panel 16 on the other hand can also be folded along lines 10 and 11, flat on the strip 7 and on the closure panel 2.
- the objects to be packaged can then be placed on the base 3, after which the protective tape 34 is removed to unmask the adhesive 12, the closure panel 2 is lowered, the lining panels 15 and 16 are folded sideways. outside of the side walls 5 and 6 and the strip 7 is applied to the transverse wall 4 b and the tabs 8 and 9 to the lining panels 15 and 16.
- the finished container is shown in Figure 34 and it can be seen that it is a parallelepiped with flat faces.
- Figures 35 to 39 shows an embodiment similar to that of Figures 30 to 34 but here the finished container has outer edges of protection, the same elements with the same references.
- the blank 02 is marked with four longitudinal rowing lines 65 - 66 on one side and 67 - 68 which determine two strips 69 and 70 which receive glue 64 like the flaps 20 to 23 and which extend continuously from the edge of the strip 7 to, practically, a transverse fold line 71 which separates the base 3 from the transverse wall 4 b .
- the glued strips 69 and 70 create outer edges 72 and 73 on both sides of the container, so that the side walls formed by the superposition of the walls 5 - 6 and lining panels 15 - 16 are set back from the outer edges of the container.
- These outer edges 72 and 73 constitute excellent protection of packaged objects, against impact, friction, compression and falling as the container may be subjected to during its handling and transport.
- outer edges 72 and 73 are formed of four segments and that after folding and closing the container, they are placed continuously around the entire perimeter of the container.
- the volume of the container (figure 37) is obtained by straightening the walls 5 and 6 according to the arrows F1, as with the previous embodiment but here they are fold along lines 65 and 67 which do not constitute the edges of the container, these being formed by lines 66 and 68.
- the end panel 27 is folded down to keep the side walls 5 and 6 straightened, then lift the lining panels 15 and 16 and the legs 8 and 9 which fold also on lines 65 and 67.
- the protective tape 34 is taken between the two thicknesses of cardboard and in order to still be able to unmask the adhesive 12, we have provided cutouts 34a and 34b (Figure 35) which constitute three separate segments of ribbon protection 34A, 34B and 34C, which can be removed individually (Figure 37).
- the panel end 27 is cut with a wide notch 77.
- the finished container is shown in Figure 39 and it can be seen that it is a parallelepiped with lateral faces recessed from an outer rim of protection.
- tongue 75 is not essential since the strip 7 is fixed to the transverse partition 4 b by the adhesive 12 and this variant has been presented here only to show that it is compatible with the invention when we want to further increase the security of the closure during handling of storage, sorting, transport and distribution.
- FIGS 40 to 43 there is shown an embodiment of the invention according to which completely forms the body 1 of the container, giving the four walls which surround the base 3 (transverse walls 4 and side walls 5-6) a fixed position without even partially straighten the other elements of the blank.
- the side walls 5 and 6 carry tabs 5 a and 6 a marked by lines of ramage 5 b and 6 b .
- the volume of the container begins in the same way as with the realization of Figures 12 to 15: straighten the side walls 5 and 6 and fold towards inside the flaps 21 and 23, then straighten the end panel 27 which is folded down over the flaps 21 and 23, against their inner face.
- the container body is finished and stable, and the user can easily place it on base 3 the objects to be wrapped.
- the solution proposed by the embodiment of FIGS. 44 to 47 is to limit the overlap surface of the lining panels, to reveal a part of the surface of the side walls 5 and 6, and to ensure that the adhesive 12 of the legs 8 and 9 applies both to said side walls 5 and 6 and to the lining panels, without sudden jump in thickness between these superimposed elements.
- the lining panels 151 and 161 are cut obliquely and have a substantially triangular in shape and each has two parallel slits which determine tabs 152 and 162 having a free edge opposite the part of cardboard by which they stick to the blank.
- the walls 5 and 6 are notched with three slots which also determine tongues 501 and 502 having a free edge opposite a part of cardboard.
- the tabs 8 and 9 are applied to the side walls 5 and 6 but given their length, they are also located opposite the panels 151 and 161 located in excess thickness. Simple hand pressure to apply the adhesive 12 pushes on the tongues 152 and 162 which push the tabs 501 and 601 towards the inside of the container, without any resistance due to the flexibility of the carton.
- the tongues 152 and 162 are thus placed in an inclined plane, so that the legs 8 and 9 are applied flat on their entire length, where they carry the adhesive 12 which is, of course, opposite the tongues 152 and 162.
- Two tongues 153 and 163 are provided here at the base of the panels 151 and 161, intended for be folded and inserted according to arrow F3 into slots 502 and 602 formed at the base of side walls 5 and 6.
- the finished container is shown in Figure 47 and it can be seen that it is a parallelepiped with flat faces, without any irregularities other than the oblique obliquity legs 8 and 9.
- FIGS. 48 to 53 show an embodiment of the invention which leads to a container "in height", like that of Figures 10 and 11, with this difference that we start from a blank 03 and that the blank that is delivered to the user is folded and glued on itself in double thickness.
- the container is of the type comprising an automatic bottom which is well known per se and which, therefore, will not be described in detail. It is only recalled that this bottom is formed by precut elements 3 a , 3 b and 3 c and 3 d , integral with the side walls 5 and 6 and the transverse walls 4 a and 4 b . Elements 3 a and 3 c carry tabs 3 e and 3 f by which they must be bonded respectively to element 3 b and to element 4 b .
- Element 3 b is a covering panel which is superimposed on all the other three elements of the bottom 3 a , 3 c and 3 d and which constitutes the base on which the objects to be packaged are arranged, provided that the container finished remains in the upright position and not in the lying position.
- This panel 3b is provided with a tongue 3g which is intended to get stuck in a slit 4c formed at the base of the transverse wall 4 b is lowered when the panel 3b by pressing it, to prevent the panel 3 b to rise up.
- the user deforms the blank in parallelogram to the shape regular parallelepiped of Figure 52, passing through all orientations intermediaries, an example of which is shown in FIGS. 50 and 51.
- Figures 54 to 56 are similar to Figures 48 to 50, only the elements in front form the bottom of the container being different, so there is no point in describing them to new.
- the closure is obtained as already described with the previous embodiment, namely that the legs 5 a and 6 a are folded down, then the closure panel 2, then the panel 7 and the fixing of the legs 8 and 9 outside the side walls 5 and 6.
- interruptions lower 80 'and upper 80 are located between the free edges of the tabs 5 a ' - 6 a 'and 5 a - 6 a , in front of the wrapped objects so that they are not in contact with adhesive 12.
- Adhesive 12 is nevertheless provided on the panels 2 and 2 'so that they attach to the legs 5 a - 6 a and 5 a ' - 6 a 'by constituting an assembly which can no longer dissociate and which allows therefore easy handling until the final fixing of each of these two sets [2 - 5a - 6a] and [2 '- 5a' - 6a '] by the strip 7 - 7' and the legs 8 - 8 'and 9 - 9 '.
- a container in accordance with the invention can have a background of any type.
- FIGS. 48 to 53 on the one hand and 54 to 59 on the other hand illustrate a container respectively automatic and a background specific to the invention.
- An American box according to the invention can be produced according to two different variants, namely at constant volume or at volume adjustable.
- the user can use a cutting tool B to create slots along the four fold lines that separate the walls 5, 4 a , 6 and 4 b to allow them to bend substantially at the same level as that of objects A, according to that of lines 87 which is closest to this level.
- legs 5 a and 6 a which may or may not overlap, depending on the height at which the side walls 5 and 6 fold. In fact, what is thus folded down is formed by the legs 5 a and 6 a , and through the upper part of walls 5 and 6.
- this panel 2 is given a minimum width l , that is to say - say the one that is just necessary for its maintenance by the strip 7 folded over it when the size of the American box is as large as possible with a given blank.
- the strip 7 is folded over the panel 2 and in doing so the wall 4 a substantially folds at the legs 5 a - 6 a and the panel 2 already folded towards the inside of the container, and the free edge of the strip 7 is located beyond the outline of the closed box. Consequently, the strip 7 is folded forming an external edge 88, and is applied against the wall 4 b to which it is fixed by the unmasked adhesive 12.
- the closing of the box is completed by folding and fixing the legs 8 and 9 against the walls 5 and 6, as shown in FIG. 63.
- the invention applies particularly well to containers intended for shipments by by post or by courier, since the closure of these containers can be obtained from simple, effective and tamper-proof manner with means built into the container itself (adhesive 12 and protective tape 34).
