Device (10) for strapping packages (13) with a thermoplastic tape (14) fed from a supply of tape (55) into and through a tape guide channel (12) surrounding the package (13) to a tape closing unit (15) which joins tape portions (14', 14") overlapping one another in the tape strapping plane together by means of friction welding, respective clamping jaws (25', 41') for pressing a tape portion (14', 14") against a support (42) being provided upstream and downstream of the overlapping region and, in the overlapping region of the tape portions (14', 14"), a vibrator (22) oscillating parallel to the plane of the tape vibrating the tape portion (14') directed towards it at high frequency relative to the other tape portion, thereby generating frictional heat and welding the tape portions (14', 14") together, and the clamping jaw (25') of that tape portion (14') engaged by the vibrator (22) being arranged to move in and opposite to at least one direction parallel to the plane of the tape, characterised in that the vibrator (22) oscillates about an axis (29) extending through the movable clamping jaw (25'), that it oscillates about the same axis (29) in the same direction as the vibrator (22), but is only carried along by the vibrating tape portion (43) and that the support cooperating with the movable clamping jaw (25') is a portion of the vibrator (22) itself.
  2. Device according to claim 1, characterised in that the vibrator (22) is mounted on the end of a hollow shaft (31) which supports the movable clamping jaw (25') in an axially displaceable and rotatable manner.
  3. Device according to claim 1 or claim 2, characterised in that the friction surface (22a) of the vibrator (22) includes together with the opposing surface (28) of a vibrator support (welding clamp (27)) an angle of inclination (w) which opens in the direction of the tape away from the axis of vibration (29) of the vibrator (22).
  4. Device according to claim 3, characterised in that the angle of inclination (w) has a magnitude of approximately 0.3° to 1.0°.
  5. Device according to claim 1 or one of the following claims, characterised in that the angle of oscillation of the vibrator (22) has a magnitude of approximately 4° to 5°.
  6. Device according to claim 2 or claim 3, characterised in that the vibrator (22) forms the top plate of the tape closing unit (15) directed towards the package (13), is mounted on the end of the hollow shaft (31) and from there projects freely into the tape strapping plane at one side.
  7. Device according to claim 2 or one of the following claims, characterised in that the movable tape clamp (25) associated with the vibrator (22) has a shank (30) traversing the hollow shaft (31) and forming the ram for its stroke control, wherein said ram can be acted upon at its end face by a control surface forming part of a control element such as a cam (47) or cam disc, said control element being mounted on a drive shaft (45) extending parallel to the strapping plane.
  8. Device according to claim 7, characterised in that the drive shaft (45) has control elements (47; 48; 49) for all of the stroke-controlled functional parts of the tape closing unit and therefore forms a central drive.
  9. Device according to claim 7 or claim 8, characterised in that the stroke-controlled components of the tape closing unit, such as tape clamps (25, 41), tape separating knife (46) and vibrator support (27) and the stroke-constant functional components cooperating therewith, such as vibrator (22) and clamp support (42) are guided or held in a common carrier (50) mounted to pivot about the axis of the central drive shaft (45) and can be swivelled by means of additional control surfaces moved thereby in such a manner that the tape closing unit (15) as a whole can be moved temporarily out of the tape strapping plane.
