- Referring first to figures 1 to 4, the cosmetic pencil holder comprises a
body 1 which defines three separatepencil receiving compartments cosmetic pencils compartments 2 so that any one of the pencils may be gripped and removed from itscompartment 2. - A resilient, elongate
retaining element 9 with an inwardly directedprotrusion 10 thereon, extends outwardly from the upper end of each side wall of each of thecompartments 2. The spacing between theprotrusions 10 of each pair of opposedretaining elements 9 of eachcompartment 2 is less than the diameter of the pencils 3. When a pencil 3 is inserted into acompartment 2, theretaining elements 9 of that compartment is displaced outwardly so that theprotrusions 10 are biased inwardly and resiliently engages the pencil 3, thereby releasably to retain the pencil in its compartment and inhibit its accidental withdrawal from thecompartment 2. - By inserting the sharpened end regions of the
pencils compartments compartments 2 in reverse manner so that the sharpened end regions of the pencils 3 project from theircompartments 2. - A suitable pencil sharpener 4 is provided on
body 1 and includes apencil receiving passage 5 inbody 1 giving access to a sharpeningblade 6 which is mounted on acarrier 11 which is fast withbody 1. As can be seen from figures 2, 3 and 4, the sharpener 4 as well as thecarrier 11,passage 5 andblade 6 lie at an angle tocompartments 2 so thatpassage 5 faces outwardly in a direction lying at an angle to that in whichcompartments 2 face. - As shown in figure 3, any one of the pencils 3 which is required to be sharpened, such as the
middle pencil 3b, may be withdrawn from itscompartment 2b and inserted intopassage 5 for sharpening byblade 6. The angular orientation of the sharpener 4 relative to the pencils 3 incompartments 2 provides sufficient space between thepencil 3b to be sharpened and theend pencil 3c located in theend compartment 2c, to permit operative manipulation of thepencil 3b to be sharpened as shown in figure 3. - As can be seen from figures 4, 4a and 4b, sharpener 4 includes a
hollow tip 20 which is fast withbody 1 andframe 11, extends longitudinally from one end ofpassage 5 and has a longitudinally facingoutlet 20a through which the sharpenedend 21 of the pencil core extends during the sharpening ofpencil 3b. Sharpener 4 also includes an L-shaped formation 22 which is fast withframe 11,tip 20 andbody 1 and which supportsblade 6 up to its outer end.Formation 22 presents a shapingedge 22a which is locatedadjacent blade 6 in a position which is spaced outwardly fromoutlet 20a and is spaced inwardly from theouter end 6a ofblade 6. - During sharpening rotation of
pencil 3b the sharpenedcore end 21 of the pencil core engages shapingedge 22a and the latter acts to round off the outer tip ofcore end 21. - The outer periphery of the
upper portion 1a ofbody 1 is complementary in shape to the inner periphery of ahollow cover 7 of tubular configuration which is open at oneend 7a and closed at itsopposite end 7b.Cover 7 is removably mountable on theupper portion 1a ofbody 1 overcompartments 2 and pencils 3 therein and overpassage 5 so that pencils 3 extend intohollow cover 7 when the latter is in position. At itsopen end 7a,hollow cover 7 is provided on its opposed side walls with inwardly directed protrusions 12 which are adapted resiliently to clip intorecesses 13 in the sides of theupper portion 1a ofbody 1, thereby releasably to retaincover 7 onbody 1. It is also possible forcover 7 to be removably mountable with a friction fit on theupper portion 1a ofbody 1. -
Body 1 also includes alower frame portion 1b which is provided with ahollow cover 8 of tubular configuration which is open at its oneend 8a and is closed at itsopposite end 8b.Cover 8 is adapted to be removably mountable onlower frame portion 1b round sharpener 4. - At its
open end 8a,cover 8 is provided on its opposed side walls with inwardly directedprotrusions 14 which are adapted resiliently to clip intorecesses 15 in the sides offrame portion 1b ofbody 1, thereby releasably to retaincover 8 onbody 1. It is also possible forcover 8 to be releasably mountable with a friction fit onlower frame portion 1a. -

Covers - When both covers 7 and 8 are mounted on
body 1 as shown in figure 1, pencils 3 and the inlet topassage 5 of the sharpening means are enclosed bycover 7 and sharpener 4 is enclosed bycover 8 to provide a neat casing of aesthetically pleasing appearance which enclosesbody 1 and its contents, as shown in figure 1. - It will be appreciated that when both covers 7 and 8 are mounted on
body 1 as shown in figure 1, pencils 3 are retained by retainingelements 9 to inhibit accidental withdrawal of the pencils from theircompartments 2. Pencils 3 are also protected bycover 7 against bumping and damage when the holder is carried in a handbag, pocket or the like. The sharpened tips of the pencils 3 are protected against breakage. Futhermore, soiling of the handbag or pocket by the sharpened tips is prevented. - If a cosmetic pencil 3 is required for use, the
cover 7 may be removed as shown in figure 2 to permit any one of the pencils 3 as may be required, to be removed from itscompartment 2. - When
cover 7 is removed, thepassage 5 of sharpener 4 is also exposed and a pencil 3 which requires sharpening, may be sharpened as shown in figure 3.Cover 8 may be removed to empty out parings and shavings produced by sharpening of a pencil. - As sharpener 4 is fast with
body 1, it is readily available for the sharpening of a pencil 3 which is withdrawn from acompartment 2 and loss or displacement of sharpener 4 is prevented. The presence ofcover 8 allows for the sharpening of a pencil in any locality without leaving any litter. - Instead of pencil sharpener 4 and its
pencil receiving passage 5 andblade 6 lying at an angle tocompartments 2 so thatpassage 5 faces outwardly in a direction lying at an angle to that in which compartments 2 face as shown in figures 3 and 4, the arrangement of figure 5 may be used. - As shown in figure 5, pencil sharpener 4 and its
pencil receiving passage 5,carrier 11 andblade 6 are disposed in substantially parallel relationship topencil receiving compartments 2 so thatsharpener passage 5 faces outwardly in the same direction as that in which compartments 2 face.Carrier 11 is fast withbody 1. - In order to provide sufficient space between a
pencil 3b to be sharpened and theend pencil 3c located in theend compartment 2c, the sharpener 4 and itspencil receiving passage 5 are spaced laterally from theend compartment 2c as shown in figure 5. - It is not essential to provide a pencil sharpener which is fast with
body 1 as shown in figures 3 to 5. As shown in figures 6 and 7,body 1 may be provided with a furthersharpener receiving compartment 16 in addition to the pencil receiving compartments 2. Anysuitable pencil sharpener 17 may be removably located in thefurther compartment 16. - When covers 7 and 8 are mounted on
body 1 as shown in figure 1, pencils 3 andpencil sharpener 17 are totally enclosed bycover 7. - If a cosmetic pencil is required for use, the
cover 7 may be removed as shown in figure 6 to permit any one of the pencils 3 as may be required, to be removed from itscompartment 2. - When
cover 7 is removed, thesharpener 17 is also exposed and may be removed from itscompartment 16 for sharpening of a pencil in conventional manner. - With the arrangement of figures 6 and 7,
cover 8 may be removable frombody 1 or may be fast therewith. - Referring now to figure 8,
sharpener receiving compartment 16 is spaced transversely from the endpencil receiving compartment 2c and is provided with aninternal retaining formation 18 adapted releasably to holdsharpener 17 in position incompartment 16. The floor ofcompartment 16 is provided with anaperture 19 which places a shavings outlet fromsharpener 17 in communication with the interior ofhollow cover 8 which constitutes a removable waste material receptacle. - With the arrangement of figure 8, pencils may be sharpened by means of
sharpener 17 while the latter is in position incompartment 16, in a manner similar to that described above with reference to figure 5. - It will be appreciated that many other variations in detail are possible without departing from the scope of the appended claims.
- With a cosmetic pencil holder according to the invention, a plurality of cosmetic pencils to suit particular requirements may be located in the
compartments 2 ofbody 1. Thus, pencils of different colours according to a cosmetic colour coding system may be located incompartments 2 to provide a selection of colours to suit, for example, different seasons of the year, or different fashion trends. Alternatively, a plurality of pencils for different cosmetic purposes, such as an eye brow pencil, an eye liner and a lip liner, may be located in thecompartments 2. - A cosmetic pencil holder according to the invention may be of suitable size, shape and design to be aesthetically attractive to women and to fit easily into a handbag or a pocket to provide a readily accessible cosmetic kit.
