Description

The present invention relates to an electrical and thermal connector capable of establishing electrical contacts with printed or engraved conductors of a card as well as thermal contacts with a core or a metal or ceramic face of such a card.

It also relates to electrical connection plugs which can connect such a card with this type of connector.

There are cards with printed or engraved conductors, the support of which is made of a material which is a good conductor of heat, for example a sheet of steel or a sheet of aluminum. An insulating enamel layer generally covers the two faces of the sheet, and electrical conductors are printed or engraved thereon by an appropriate technique so as to constitute one or more interconnection networks for one or more electrical circuits. This metal support is the thermal conductor of the card which effectively contributes to the cooling of the electrical circuit (s).

Conventional electrical connectors which establish electrical contacts with the electrical conductors of such a card do little to dissipate heat because their body is, for reasons of isolation, made of a lightly or not charged plastic material. Such a material is generally considered to be a poor conductor of heat.

Conventional electrical connectors with plastic bodies which are connected to the conductors of an enamelled sheet establish thermal connections only through their electrical conductors. The capacity to transfer heat by thermal conduction of these conductors is limited because of their fine and elongated structure and their small contact surfaces.

Other means of thermal conduction must be sought if one wishes to obtain better cooling of the card and consequently of the electrical circuit carried by the card.

  • carte imprimée comportant un collecteur thermique en couche interne ;
  • carte imprimée comportant un drain thermique fixé sur une face de la carte ;
The problem of establishing thermal connections by means of electrical connectors is also raised in the case of the use of different insulated cards or plates serving as support for one or more electrical circuits, the types of which are as follows:
  • printed board comprising an internal layer thermal collector;
  • printed card comprising a heat sink fixed on one face of the card;
  • metal sheet covered on one or both sides with a thin plastic film;
  • anodized aluminum sheet on one or both sides.

The problem of thermal connection is posed in particular in electrical apparatus or equipment comprising a large number of electrical circuit boards which it is desired either to interconnect both electrically and thermally, or to connect electrically between them and thermally with a metallic mass to the interior of a frame in order to obtain better cooling of electrical circuits.

In order to be able to make real electrical and thermal interconnections, an electrical connector with high thermal conduction is required.

A solution to this problem is set out in patent U-A-4,162,818. It consists in using electrically isolated springs, except in their area of contact with the printed circuit. On the back of the printed card, a plate is attached to dissipate the calories generated by the circuits. However, the shape of the thermal contact between the wall of the connector and the radiator plate is such that the thermal resistance of this contact is quite high (small contact surface).

The present invention relates to an electrical and thermal connector for cards comprising a card insertion corridor comprising at least one electrical connection conductor having at least one flexible contact end, means for applying the flexible contact ends to the means for electrical conduction of the card, and thermal energy conduction means electrically isolated from the electrical conduction means of the card and intended to establish, by mutual contact with one face of such a card, a thermal connection, said conduction means d thermal energy being constituted by a longitudinal metal wing comprising a wall with a guide and support face of the card, characterized in that the longitudinal metal wing is arranged at right angles, its wall with its guide and support of the card, being separated, by the insertion corridor, from a longitudinal wing wall of insulating material which is parallel to it, and in that the electrical connection conductor has the form of a curved strip comprising several contact tabs separated by slots, as well as several fixing tabs folded outwards from the slots and which are anchored in the wall of the wing insulating.

The present invention also relates to a connection plug which can be plugged into the previous connector and is intended to be mounted on an edge of such a card, this plug comprising electrical conductors in the form of metal strips and a thermal energy conductor which is isolated. compared to the electrical conductors carried by the plug and which is made of a material with high thermal conductivity.

The objects and characteristics of the present invention will appear more clearly on reading the following description of exemplary embodiments, said description being made in relation to the attached drawings in which:
  • Figures 1 and 2 schematically represent a sectional view of a form of preferred embodiment of a connector according to the invention respectively before and after insertion of a card;
  • FIG. 3 represents a type of electrical connection conductors which can be fitted to the connector according to the invention;
  • FIG. 4 represents a variant of the connector according to the invention;
  • FIG. 5 schematically represents an electrical and thermal interconnection system produced with a connector according to the invention;
  • FIG. 6 schematically represents a sectional view of a preferred form of connection plug for a card to be connected to the above connectors.

Sheets 1 and 2 respectively show a section of an embodiment of the connector according to the invention before and after insertion of a card 103. In it, flexible conductors 101 are applied strongly by a cam 100 on the face 104 conductor of the card 103 engaged in the connector and whose heat sink 105 has been brought into contact with the thermal conductor 106 of the connector.

They also provide electrical connections between those 104 carried by the card 103 and those 108 carried by an insulating layer 109 deposited on a thermal well 110 on which is mounted, the thermal conductor 106 of the connector. This thermal well may be a metal plate possibly cooled by a cold fluid.

In FIG. 3, the conductors 101 are formed in a flexible metal strip 112 slightly bent in the transverse direction, and which has been cut to obtain fixing tabs 113 which are then bent at approximately right angles towards the concave side of the band. Contact tabs 114 which remain after cutting, between slots 115 then form the ends of the conductors of the connector which are connected for example by welding 111 with the conductors 108 to establish a ground contact or an electrical supply to the card. The fixing tabs 113 are made integral with the wing 116 molded in insulating material, for example by overmolding with plastic material used for molding the wing 116.

Les deux languettes 120 et 121 sont isolées électriquement soit par gainage, soit par enrobage de matière plastique.FIG. 4 represents a variant of the connector comprising flexible connection conductors comprising two fixing tabs 120 and 121 both anchored in a connector body 124 made completely of a material which is a very good conductor of heat, for example metallic. The two tongues 120 and 121 are electrically insulated either by sheathing or by coating with plastic material.

As in the previous cases, the upper contact ends of the conductors 119 can be applied for example by a cam 122 made of insulating material, against the conductors printed on a face of the drain card or thermal wall inserted in the connector.

The strip 119 with contacts 121 can be connected to an earth or an electrical appliance by establishing an electrical connection by electrical connection means such as soldered wires, riveted wires, sockets connected to a longitudinal end of the conductor 119.

Another possible application of a strip 119, with contacts 121, similar to the strip 112, is the verification of the establishment of thermal contact between the card and the thermal wall of the connector. In this case, it is possible to use a strip 119 comprising for example two contacts 121 and to apply them by the cam 122 to two pads carried by the card so as to close an electrical control circuit.

The invention is easily applicable to all connectors for printed circuit boards of the kind mentioned above, comprising in particular a wall surface or a metallic core, even if these are protected or coated with a plastic film or coated with an electrically insulating metal oxide layer.

Les conducteurs 86 de connexion électrique du connecteur 84 traversent alors des trous dans la carte maîtresse 85 qui sont revêtus d'une couche isolante et ils sont réunis au circuit électrique directement ou par l'intermédiaire des conducteurs imprimés ou gravés sur la carte.FIG. 5 shows by way of example an electrical and thermal interconnection system in which a daughter card 80 of rectangular surface, with metal face 81, is mounted on the one hand by its longitudinal edges in card guides 82 and on the other hand, is fixed by a side edge to a plug 83 of a kind described above. This plug 83 is engaged in a mixed connector 84, a base wall of which is applied to a master card 85 of a type similar to those mentioned above. This master card 85 can carry an electrical circuit on this same face isolated by an enamel or on the other face. The electrical connection conductors 86 of the connector 84 then pass through holes in the master card 85 which are coated with an insulating layer and they are connected to the electrical circuit directly or through the conductors printed or engraved on the card.

Un ou plusieurs éléments métalliques tels que des pièces d'un châssis 87, 88 peuvent en outre être connectés, comme cela est représenté, à la carte maîtresse 85.One or more metallic elements such as parts of a chassis 87, 88 can also be connected, as shown, to the master card 85.

It is preferable to use metal as the material constituting the thermal wall of the connector or of the plug matching the connector. However, a wall made of another material with good thermal conduction such as ceramic for example could also be used.

La figure 6 montre que le connecteur selon l'invention est également applicable à des cartes de type enfichable lorsque celles-ci sont munies d'une fiche de connexion 40 assortie au connecteur mixte précédent.FIG. 6 shows that the connector according to the invention is also applicable to cards of the plug-in type when these are provided with a connection plug 40 which matches the preceding mixed connector.

An insulating wall 42 of the plug 40 is applied to the edge of the face carrying the conductors 43 of the card 41.

In housings (not shown) are maintained conductors 44 for electrical connection of the plug 40 produced in the form of sections of wires or lamellae with controlled flexibility of known type. The ends 44a of these are in contact, for example by welding, with the conductors 43 printed or engraved on the card 41. Opposite ends 44b are directed along an external face of the insulating wall 42 and anchored to that -this. Thus, they can contact respectively the conductors 47 of a connector 46 with a metallic thermal wall 48 of the type described above.

The plug 40 also has a metal wall 45 intended to be applied against the internal face of the thermal wall 48 of the connector 46 during its insertion. The wall 45 may be provided with projecting parts 45a which are embedded by overmolding in the insulating wall 42. It is fixed to the back of the metal wall 4 of the card 41 by suitable means such as screws, rivets or glue.

After inserting the plug 40 into the connector 46, mutual contact is established between the wall 45 of the plug and the wall 48 of the connector 46.

The heat coming from an operating circuit mounted on the conductors 43 of the card 41 will thus be transmitted by the metal wall 41a to the metal wall 45 of the plug 40, then to the thermal wall 48 of the connector 46.

Due to their electrical and thermal characteristics, the connectors and plugs described above are capable of simultaneously transporting electrical energy and thermal energy and of being used in an electrical interconnection system and thermal.
