Es ist jedem Autofahrer bekannt, daß im Stau bzw. hinter einem Dieselfahr­ zeug die vom Ventilator angesaugte Frischluft zu einer echten Belästigung führen kann. Es handelt sich dabei weniger um die bekannten Schadstoffe wie z. B. Daß es bis heute noch keine serienmäßige Anwendungen gibt, hat folgenden Grund: Die Fachwelt vertrat die Meinung, daß der Filter für viele Jahre (100 000 km) ausreichen muß und daß mehrere Filterschichten nötig wären. Das wiederum verlangte eine so große Menge Aktivkohle, daß die Filterlagen nur in einem relativ großen Behälter unterzubringen sind. Der Platz hierfür ist aber in keinem Pkw vorhanden, so daß ein Nachrüsten nicht möglich schien. Dieser unerwartete Befund macht es nun möglich, Filter mit minimalem Platzbedarf einzubauen, so daß einer Nachrüstung im allgemeinen nichts mehr im Wege steht. Aufgrund der notgedrungen niedrigen Menge Aktivkohle ist die Lebensdauer des Filters verkürzt. So wurden beispielsweise bei einem Filter­ block von 80×80×18 mm der in die Frischluftzufuhr eines Opel Kadett (Baujahr 1987) eingebaut wurde und ca. 17 g einer kugelförmigen Aktivkohle (⌀≈0,5 mm) nach 3 Monaten erste Durchbrüche registriert.
