Die Grundidee der Erfindung besteht darin, auf einem elektrisch nichtleitenden, großflächigen Flächenelement Leiterbahnen anzuord nen, welche in ihrer Gesamtheit ein großflächiges Leiterbahnenmuster definieren. Dabei sind zwischen zwei oder mehr Enden der Leiterbahnen elektrische Kontakten vorgesehen. Als Leiterbahnenmaterial kommt Aluminium, Silber, Kupfer, eine Aluminium-Kupfer-Legierung, Chrom, Titan, Zinn, Edelstahl etc. in Frage. Im trockenen Zustand, wenn also kein Flüssigkeitsleck zu detektieren ist, mißt man zwischen den elektrischen Kontakten der Leiterbahnen einen unendlich großen elektrischen Widerstand. Gelangt Feuchtigkeit auf das Flächenelement, entsteht zwischen zwei benachbarten Leiterbahnen eine elektrisch leitfähige Verbindung. Man mißt dann einen endlichen ohmschen Widerstand. Dieser ausgelöste Stromfluß kann mit einer Signaleinrichtung, beispielsweise mit einer Signalleuchte oder mit einem akustischen Signal angezeigt werden. Die Flexibilität des Flächenelements hat den Vorteil, daß es auch bei nichtebenen Oberflächenstrukturen das Flächenelement problemlos unter Anpassung an diese Oberflächenstruktur verlegt werden kann. Indem das Flächenelement aus einem saugfähigen Material besteht, hat dies den Vorteil, daß sich auftreffende Flüssigkeitstropfen eines Lecks allmählich ausbreiten. Wenn sich der Flüssigkeitsbereich derart ausgebreitet hat, daß die beiden Leiterbahnen eines Leiterbahnen-Paares in Kontakt mit der Flüssigkeit gelangen, erfolgt die Detektion. Das Flächenelement sieht unterschiedliche Oberflächenstrukturen vor. Auf die glatte Seite werden dabei die Leiterbahnen aufgebracht, was sich hinsichtlich der Herstellungskosten als günstig erweist.
