Background
Document JP 5040525B 2 discloses a body structure of a motor vehicle. The vehicle is equipped with a sunroof. In order to limit the deformation of the vehicle body in the event of an accident, i.e. when the vehicle rolls over, the vehicle is equipped with longitudinal reinforcements (34). The roof rail (40) is attached to a tongue (50) extending from the longitudinal stiffener. The tongues are less rigid and they can absorb impact energy by deforming them, thus maintaining the shape of the vehicle interior and the health of the vehicle occupants.
Document FR 3013281 a1 discloses a body structure of a motor vehicle. A roof panel (22) is provided with a sunroof (30). The reinforcement frame (24) is intended to reinforce the rigidity of the roof panel. As shown in fig. 14 of the document, the reinforcement frame has an opening (40) at a mounting point (21) of the roof rail. In this region, the reinforcing frame (24) does not contact the roof panel (22). Therefore, in the step of assembling the roof rail to the roof panel, the risk of deformation of the roof panel is high.

The present invention aims to propose a body structure of a motor vehicle in which the step of assembling the roof rail to the roof does not produce any deformation of the roof.
The invention achieves this object by proposing a body structure of a motor vehicle, comprising: a roof panel including an outer edge bounding an outer dimension of the roof panel and an inner edge defining an opening for receiving a sunroof; a reinforcement frame for supporting a sunroof, the reinforcement frame having an outer edge defining an outer dimension of the reinforcement frame and an inner edge defining an opening substantially matching the opening of the roof panel; at least one fixing region at which the roof rail can be fixed to the roof panel, an outer edge of the reinforcement frame being provided with a U-shaped groove at the fixing region, the reinforcement frame being welded to the roof panel at a central portion of the U-shaped groove.
According to a preferred embodiment, the roof panel and the reinforcing frame are welded by cold metal transition technology (CMT).
According to a preferred embodiment, the reinforcing frame is welded to the roof panel at least on some portions of the respective inner edges of the reinforcing frame and the roof panel.
According to a preferred embodiment, the roof panel (1) comprises an opening (1.3) for receiving an accessory of the roof rail, wherein the size of the opening (1.3) substantially matches the size of the U-shaped recess (2.3) of the reinforcement frame (2).
According to a preferred embodiment, the vehicle body structure includes a vehicle body side and a roof rail, and the roof rail is fixed to the roof panel by a bolt that passes through an opening of the roof panel, through the U-shaped groove of the reinforcement frame, and through the groove of the vehicle body side.
According to a preferred embodiment, the vehicle body structure includes a vehicle body side, in which the outer edge of the reinforcement frame is not in contact with the roof panel outside the fixing region, and the outer edge is dispersedly or continuously bonded to the vehicle body side.
The invention also relates to a motor vehicle having a sunroof and a body structure according to the invention.
The invention also relates to a method of manufacturing a motor vehicle comprising a body structure according to the invention, in which method the reinforcing frame is assembled to the roof panel on a welding line of a production line and the roof rail is assembled to the roof panel on an assembly line, i.e. downstream in the production line.
Drawings
Other features or advantages of the invention appear with the aid of the accompanying drawings, which show:
FIG. 1: a bottom view of the vehicle body structure of the invention;
FIG. 2: a cross-sectional view of the vehicle body structure of the invention.
Detailed Description
Fig. 1 shows a body structure according to the invention, seen from the bottom (in the direction of the body structure when mounted in a motor vehicle). The roof panel 1 has an outer edge 1.1 of a substantially rectangular shape. The roof panel 1 has an opening 4 for receiving a sunroof defined by an inner edge 1.2 of the roof panel 1. The roof panel may be made of metal and stamped and cut to the desired dimensions. On the left side of fig. 1, the roof panel has an arcuate shape intended to match the design of the windshield of the motor vehicle. The roof panel also has cutouts to allow attachment to the sides of the vehicle body.
The vehicle body structure of the invention is also provided with a reinforcing frame 2 for reinforcing the structure. The frame 2 has a substantially rectangular outer edge 2.1 and an inner edge 2.2 defining an opening 4, the opening 4 being substantially similar to an opening of a roof panel. Similar to the roof panel 1, the frame may be made of metal and stamped and cut to the desired dimensions to meet mechanical requirements. According to a preferred embodiment, the inner edge 2.2 of the reinforcement frame 2 is welded to the inner edge 1.2 of the roof panel 1.
In the example shown, the body structure has four fixing regions 3. The roof rail may be fixed to the structure in these areas 3. As can be seen from the enlarged view of the fixing area, the frame is provided with a U-shaped recess 2.3. The U-shaped groove has two side portions 2.31 and 2.33 and a central portion 2.32. A bolt (6 in fig. 2D) fixing the roof rail 5 is received in an opening 1.3 of the roof panel 1. The openings may be centrally located in the recess 2.3 of the frame 2 and their respective dimensions substantially match each other.
According to the invention, the roof panel 1 and the reinforcing frame 2 are welded together at the central portion 2.32. This feature ensures that the roof panel 1 is sufficiently rigid to not deform when attaching the roof rail 5 to the roof panel 1.
Fig. 2 shows a plurality of cross sections of the body structure of the invention, including in the fixing region 3 and outside the fixing region. The left side of each cross section is the outer edge and the right side of each cross section is the inner edge or opening 4.
Fig. 2A shows the roof panel 1 and the reinforcing frame 2 in the fixing region 3. The cross-section is defined as a in fig. 1: section A. From left to right in this example, the outer edge 1.1 of the roof panel, which is curved on itself, the opening 1.3, the weld W between the frame and the roof panel at the central portion 2.32 of the U-shaped groove 2.3, and the weld W at the inner edges of the roof panel and the frame can be seen.
Fig. 2B shows a graph according to a defined in fig. 1: a and a cross section corresponding to fig. 2A, which has a part of the side of the Body In White (BIW) or the body side 7. The side of the body has an aperture 7.3, which aperture 7.3 is aligned with the opening 1.3 of the roof panel and the U-shaped recess 2.3 of the frame. The holes 7.3 are intended to receive bolts 6 for fixing the roof rail. The roof panel may be, but need not be, welded to the vehicle body side at the fixing region.
Fig. 2C shows the following along the line B defined in fig. 1: b cross section. This part is outside the fixing area 3. The outer edge 1.1 of the roof panel can here also be welded to the body side 7, preferably by laser welding (marked W in the figure) to the body side 7. The inner edge of the roof panel and the frame may also be welded together. However, the outer edge of the reinforcing frame does not contact the roof panel. The shape of the reinforcing frame 2 is such that a gap exists between the roof panel and the outer edge of the frame. The frame may be suspended, or may be glued or welded to the side of the vehicle body. Point G in fig. 2C indicates the glue between the reinforcement frame 2 and the vehicle body side 7. When the roof rail 5 is mounted on the roof panel, the region outside the fastening region is not subjected to forces, so that a reinforcing frame, which is in contact with the roof panel 1 here, does not have to be designed.
Fig. 2D shows cross section a: fixed area 3 in a. This figure corresponds to figure 2B after the roof rail 5 has been installed. Here, a roof rail 5 with a bolt 6 can be seen, which bolt 6 serves to fix the rail to the roof panel. The bolt passes through the opening 1.3 of the roof panel, through the U-shaped recess 2.3 and through the hole 7.3. The bolt 6 may be made of a screw engaging a nut in the beam. Such accessories and corresponding water seals for protecting the inner layers of a vehicle from rain are known to those skilled in the art. The roof rail is an elongated profile which may comprise an inner reinforcement and may be provided with a pillar comprising a bolt for attaching the cross member to the roof panel at a fixing area. The roof rail and the accessory may take any suitable form, shape or size without departing from the scope of the present invention.
In fig. 2D it is shown in particular that the welding between the roof panel 1 and the frame 2 is effected during the step of tightening the bolts 6. The stress that is generated when the bolts 6 are tightened and that may damage the shape of the roof panel 1 is offset by the presence of the reinforcement frame 2.
The invention also relates to a motor vehicle (not shown) equipped with a body structure according to the invention. The motor vehicle has a sunroof mounted on a vehicle body structure. The sunroof may be of any type, i.e. fixed, pivotable and/or slidable, panoramic, transparent or opaque, … … type of vehicle made of fabric or glass, not necessarily equipped with a roof rail, but comprising features allowing the mounting of the roof rail, in particular features of the body structure of the invention. The recess/aperture may be covered by a suitable cover and the roof rail may be installed as an after market.
The invention further relates to a method of manufacturing a motor vehicle comprising a body structure according to the invention. In the method of the invention, the roof panel is assembled to the reinforcement frame in a welding line and the roof rail is assembled to the roof panel in an assembly line that is downstream of the welding line in the production line.
