Device for generating a pulsating jet of liquid
The invention relates to a device for generating a pulsating liquid jet.
This device can be used in particular in a device which is used to clean the teeth and massage the gums and which works with a pulsating water jet. The use of a pulsating water jet of small cross-section has been found to be effective in removing particles from the spaces between teeth and in massaging the gums.
Such a water jet has also been found to be particularly effective in removing foreign matter from the areas under the gums.
The present invention aims to create a device of the type mentioned, which is simple and robust and can be assembled precisely in a simple manner. A novel arrangement is to be provided, which serves to reduce wear and tear and vibrations during operation.
The invention is characterized by a pump with a cylinder, in which a piston is movable back and forth, and which is provided with an inlet and an outlet opening, a rotatable adjustment organ which is used to adjust the amount of liquid delivered through the outlet opening , an electric motor for driving the pump with a switch for switching the motor on and off and a rotatable and axially movable control element for actuating the rotatable setting element and the switch between its on and off positions,
wherein the control member is designed to influence the intensity of the pulses of the liquid delivered by the pump regardless of its axial position and to switch the motor on and off regardless of its angular position.
Further details of the invention emerge from the following description and the drawing, in which an embodiment of the device is shown schematically. Show it:

6 shows a three-dimensional view on a larger scale of the parts of the pump in the disassembled state.
The device shown in FIGS. 1 and 2 contains a housing 10. A container 11 is detachably attached to the housing 10 and serves to supply water to a pump in the housing 10. The pump is described in connection with FIGS. 3 and 4. The pulsating water jet is generated by the pump and exits through a nozzle 12 which is detachably attached to a handle 13. The handle 13 is arranged on a sliding part 14 which is slidably mounted in a base 15 of the housing 10. The nozzle 12 is connected to the pump in the housing 10 by a coiled tube 16 made of plastic for receiving the pulsating water jet.
The motor for driving the pump and generating the pulses is controlled by a rotatable and axially movable knob 17, which is used to operate the motor switch and at the same time to control the intensity of the water jet delivered by the pump. The tube is wound around a protruding housing part 14 which is formed in a recess 19. The housing part 18 simultaneously forms the housing for a part of the motor which is used to drive the pump.
A pump, which is shown in FIGS. 3 and 4, is provided to generate the pulsating water jet. The pump conveys the liquid through an outlet opening 22 to which the pipe 16 is connected. The pump 21 contains a cylinder block 23 with a cylinder 24 in which a piston 25 is movable to and fro. The liquid from the container is fed to the pump through a connecting line 26 which is located between the container and the housing 10. From the connecting line 26 the water passes into a pipe 27 in the housing 10, which is connected to the inlet 28 of the pump.
The pump is provided with inlet and outlet openings 30 and 31, a suction valve 32 being arranged in the inlet opening. The openings 30 and 31 are formed in the same axial direction at the ends of a pump chamber 33 which is in communication with the cylinder 24. When the piston 25 is moved back and forth, it sucks in the liquid through the inlet opening 30 and conveys it through the outlet opening 31 on its delivery stroke.
The pump is actuated in such a way that the inertia of the pumped liquid maintains the flow during the suction stroke of the piston and that liquid is supplied through the inlet opening 30 without being withdrawn from the outlet opening.
The piston 25 is driven by a two-pole single-phase motor 35 which has a rotor. 36, which is connected to a pinion 37. The pinion meshes with a drive wheel 38 with a cylindrical extension 40 which extends through a round opening in a partition wall 41 which is fastened in the housing 10. The rotor 36 is rotatably mounted on a fixed shaft 42 in bearings 43 and 44. The lower bearing 44 is firmly connected to the rotor and the pinion 37. The fixed shaft 42 extends from a bracket 45 to the partition wall 41 by which it is supported at its other end. The piston is driven by a to-and-fro movement of a drive element 46 by means of a link mechanism.
The link drive contains a guide 47 on the drive member 46 and a sliding block 48 and a pin 49 which is eccentrically attached to the cylindrical extension 40 and is mounted in the sliding block 48.
The mechanism of the link drive is known per se and does not need to be explained further.
During the operation of the device it is desirable to be able to adjust the intensity of the beam in order to change the kinetic energy of the individual impulses according to the wishes of the user. This enables the user to select the optimal kinetic energy for the treatment of certain areas of the gums on which the beam is directed. In the device shown, this setting takes place by selecting the pressure of the liquid conveyed by the pump through the outlet opening 31. In the embodiment shown, this choice is achieved by changing the closing or throttling effect of the suction valve 32.
The suction valve 32 is adjustable between its position in which it rests on the inlet opening 30 and a position remote from the inlet opening, which is shown in FIG. The organ provided for this purpose contains a stop 57 which is firmly connected to a button 58. The button 58 is formed on the circumference with a toothing which meshes with an intermediate gear 60.
The intermediate gear 60 meshes with a gear 61 of the control button 17. When the control button 17 is turned, the gear 61 is and moves the wheel 60 with the button 58 and changes the position of the stop 57 relative to the inlet opening 30. The pressure in the In this way, the pump chamber 33 can be changed in that the stop 57 either allows the suction valve 32 to close completely, which corresponds to the highest pressure, or more or less leaves the valve open up to its fully open position, which is shown in FIG. 4 is shown. The intermediate positions provide pressures that are between these two extremes. The control button 17 is not only rotatable, but also movable in the axial direction.
The arrangement of the control button is rotatably supported by a bearing of the gear 61 in a sleeve 62, the sleeve 62 being attached to the partition 41. The sleeve acts as a bearing and holds the gear 61 in mesh with the gear 60.
The motor 35 can be switched on and off by a switch 63. The switch 63 is provided with a switching part 64 which can be moved in a straight line between the positions on and off. Switches of this type are well known. The details of the design of this combined control for setting the pressure and for operating the motor switch are shown in FIG. 5 on a larger scale. The button 17 is adapted to operate the switch member 64 of the switch 63 in the direction of and away from the front plate 65 of the device. For this actuation of the switch 63, the button 17 is provided with two parallel round disks 66 and 67 which are arranged at a distance from one another, the switching part 64 being located between them.
A certain amount of play is provided on both sides of the switching part, so that the switching part is loosely located between the panes. When the button 17 is pulled outward from its position shown in the drawing, the disk 67 touches the switching part 64 and moves it forward until it reaches its switched-on position and switches on the motor. Similarly, when the engine is to be turned off, the button is pushed in. The disk 66 touches the switching part 64 and moves the switch into its off position. The gear 61 is elongated and remains in engagement with the gear 60 during the longitudinal movement of the button 17. In the embodiment shown, the button 17 is provided with a shaft 68 which is pressed into the gear 61.
The disks 66 and 67 are attached to a shaft 70 which is also rigidly attached in the gear 61. This entire arrangement forms an easily operated mechanism for controlling the function of the device and allows operation by a single easily accessible control member. It is clear that the switch can be operated regardless of the angular position of the button 17. In the same way, the pressure can be adjusted regardless of the axial position of the button. This combination of controls can also be used with other types of rotary pressure regulators.
The drive member 46 is slidably and rotatably mounted on a fixed pin 51 which is pressed into a projection 52 formed on the partition wall 41. The piston 25 is connected to the drive element 46 by a projection 53 which has a head and engages in a corresponding recess 54 which is formed in the end of the drive element 46. The recess 54 is provided with a lateral slot 55 as shown in FIG. 3, through which the head of the projection 53 can be inserted during the assembly of the mechanism. Details of the design of the connection between the piston 25 and the drive member 46 can best be seen from the exploded view in FIG. The figure shows the projection 53 of the piston with the head as well as the slotted recess 54 of the drive member 46.
The head of the projection 53 is substantially cylindrical in the same way as the stem which connects it to the piston. The head has a larger diameter so that it cannot be pulled in the axial direction out of the recess 54, which encloses the head as a supplementary part. The dimensions and the design of the recess 54 and the head 53 are selected such that a lateral and angular movement of the piston 25 with respect to the drive element 46 is permissible. This relative movement is sufficient to compensate for deviations in equiaxiality, as well as a parallel axial displacement between the axes of the bore 24 of the pump and the axis of movement of the drive member 46. This relative movement is also sufficient to transmit substantial lateral movement from the drive member 46 to prevent the piston 25.
This has the consequence that the assembly of the pump is easier and the required mutual position of the piston 25 and the drive organ 46 is easily achieved, so that vibrations and wear are kept small and the operation of the pump is quiet and reliable.
As an example, but not intended to be limiting, a pump was manufactured according to the drawing and provided with a cylinder which had an internal diameter of approximately 8 mm.
The remaining parts had essentially proportional dimensions as shown in the drawing. The diameter of the cylindrical parts of the projection 53 was 0.75 mm smaller than the width of the corresponding parts of the recess 54.
The length of the head of the projection 53 was 0.12 mm less than the depth of the corresponding part of the recess 54. With this arrangement, it was found that the piston did not have to absorb the lateral forces that arise from the movement of the link mechanism. In addition, the piston did not have to serve as a bearing for the actuation mechanism. The entire device with the exception of the motor, the associated electrical parts, the shafts and the drive member 46 was made of plastic, which is not electrically conductive and facilitates the insulation of the electrical parts from the water-bearing parts of the device.
The container 11 supplies water through the connecting line 26 to the flexible pipe 27. A valve 80 is arranged in the bottom of the container, which valve prevents the water from flowing out before the container is fitted in the housing 10. When the container is in its position on the housing, a pin 81, which is arranged in the connecting line 26, cooperates with the valve 80, holding it open and allowing water to flow out of the container. The connecting line is sealed by an O-ring or other suitable seal 82, which is located between the inner and the outer parts of the connecting line 26.
The housing 10 and the container are substantially symmetrical about the vertical axis and are circular as shown. The water outlet of the container and the inlet of the housing are in the center on the vertical axis.
As a result, the fastening of the container to the housing is made much easier, and the interacting parts of the connecting line 26 can easily be brought together. The device shown in FIG. 1 is designed in such a way that the switch and the other parts are located above the partition 41 and are separated from the pump and the water-carrying parts. This is achieved in that the water is led from the container 11 through the connecting line 26 and the flexible pipe 27 through the partition 41 into the space below, in which the pipe 27 is connected to the inlet 28 of the pump. The opening in the partition, through which the pipe 27 is guided, tightly encompasses the pipe and forms a seal which makes it difficult for water to enter the upper chamber of the housing 10.
In addition, the cylindrical extension 40 is rotatably guided in the opening in the partition 41 with as little play as possible. The openings in the partition wall are therefore provided with little or practically no play around the parts which lead through the partition wall. The risk of water penetrating through the plate is reduced in that the elements for pumping water and the control elements are arranged below the partition wall 41. The water that should emerge and collect has the tendency to flow away from the partition wall under the influence of gravity.
In this way, the motor and the electrical parts are separated from the mechanism for pumping the water, both by the partition and by the influence of gravity.
It goes without saying that various changes to the embodiment described as an example are possible within the scope of the following claims.
