Description

Beispiel: Zu 216 Teilen Rohkresol D. A. B.

Process for the preparation of a tanning substance. In. Main Patent No. 156126, a process for the preparation of a tanning substance is described, according to which naphthalene monosulfonic acid is heated with formaldehyde and para-dioxydiphenyl sulfone in aqueous solution. With this process it is not possible to replace the naphthalenesulfonic acid with sulfonic acids of the phenols, since in the course of the condensation water-insoluble resins are formed, which as such are worthless for purposes of use.

Although the sequence of reactions practiced according to the five additional patents No. 170350 (5.1 from, namely the action of formaldehyde on dioxydiphenyl sulfones in alkaline solution and the subsequent acidic condensation with aromatic sulfonic acids means a great expansion of the main patent process, it was not possible in this way either . to combine the sulfonic acids of phenols with the valuable dioxydiphenyl sulfones to form tannins.

It has now been found that a valuable tanning agent is obtained without the deposition of troublesome resins if para-dioxydiphenyl sulfone is condensed with formaldehyde and crude cresol sulfonic acid in an alkaline solution with heating. The reaction product is precipitated with common salt; a blue-violet precipitate is produced by ferric chloride. When the pelt is tanned, the new tanning agent produces a leather of excellent lightfastness and fullness.

A direct combination of the components in an alkaline medium as described above was not to be expected based on experience to date. The fact that it is no longer necessary to produce the para-dioxydipheryl sulfone separately, as described in the main patent, means that it can be condensed further in the same operation, making the process much simpler and cheaper. The leathers produced with this new type of tanning agent resemble those of the main patent with regard to their excellent fullness, but are usually distinguished by improved lightfastness. Example: To 216 parts of raw cresol D. A. B.

IV, 180 parts of 63% oleum are added in the cold and heated to 90 to 100 for half an hour. After adding 150 parts of crude phenol, consisting of a mixture of o-gresol and carbolic acid, the mixture is heated to 170 for one hour while air is passed through.

After this time the batch contains about 172 parts of raw cresol sulfonic acid and 280 parts of para-dioxydipheriyl sulfone. After adding a further 100 parts of crude cresol sulfonic acid, the batch is neutralized and subjected to steam distillation to remove excess phenols, then made alkaline with lye (phenolphthalein) and, after adding 150 parts of formaldehyde, heated to the boil with 30% strength .

After about 6-8 hours of heating, the batch is made slightly acidic. It is a ready-to-use extract with the same tanning properties as the product of the main patent. The duration of the heating can be shortened if the condensation is carried out under increased pressure.
