Abstract

A vehicular marker lamp, comprising a frame (5) consisting of a vertical and a horizontal tube (6, 7) and a base (8), and light casings (24) with their light sources. A plastic inner tube (12) is provided within the horizontal tube (7), glasses (15) being tightened at the ends of said inner tube with clamping rings (20), light-emitting diodes (25) being secured to printed circuit boards (16) in the hermetically tight light casings (24) provided behind said glasses. The parts provided within the horizontal tube (7) are made of plastic or a corresponding material, and they damp impacts and endure corrosion.

Description

Vehicular marker lamp The present invention relates to a vehicular marker lamp, which is used when an accessory of a vehicle exceeds the width of the vehicle beyond an allowed limit.
A vehicular marker lamp acts as a warning light to other people using the road. The most typical objects where marker lamps are used are for instance snow ploughs or the like.
Numerous marker lamp structures are previously known. One of the most widely known is a marker lamp provided with conventional glow bulbs. However, glow bulbs do not endure the stress caused by severe vibration when they are used for instance in connection with snow ploughs or the like. A solution is also previously known where a glow bulb is replaced with light-emitting diodes, i.e.
with LEDs. In such a solution, a bias resistor and a desired number of light-emitting diodes are connected in series in the cap of a glow bulb. However, the vibration endurance of the construction has proved to be rather poor in practice. In addition, a problem is caused by the oxidation of the cap in harsh conditions.
To achieve a simple and hermetically tight structure which would resist corrosion very well has proved to be problematic in practice. In the previously known solutions, either the actual source of light will not last or the structures do not endure otherwise the stress they are subjected to.
- Road services in different countries have set rèquirements as regards marker lamps. It is usually required of a marker lamp that it would emit light both forward and backward. Usually, the light directed backward is red and the light directed forward is brownish yellow.
In addition, it can be required of a marker lamp that it be provided with reflectors both in the front and in the back. The intensity of the light used also has its own requirements.
The object of the present invention is to provide a vehicular marker lamp which is hermetically tight, endures the corrosion stress caused by salting, is not vulnerable to stress caused by vibration, and has a long service life in the above-mentioned operating conditions.
The vehicular marker lamp of the invention is characterized by what is disclosed in the claims presented below.
The greatest and the most significant advantage of the vehicular marker lamp of the invention is that it lasts in difficult conditions, for instance as a marker lamp located on a snow plough, better than the solutions 15 known so far. The tubular frame of the vehicular marker lamp, manufactured of metal, endures impact-like stresses and corrosion extremely well. The mounting parts and the casings of the light source are manufactured of plastic or a similar material resisting corrosion and impact-like stresses well. In addition, the parts associated with the frame are located as movable in such a manner that flexibility is achieved as regards impact-like stresses.
Since light-emitting diodes are used as the light source of the vehicular marker lamp, an extremely long service life and operational reliability as regards vibration are achieved. With the use of light-emitting diodes, an operating life of even ten years is achieved. The connection of the light-emitting diodes is also arranged in such a manner that the variations in voltage do not cause changes in luminous intensity and the brightness of light.
In the following, the invention will be described in detail with reference to the accompanying drawings.
Figure 1 shows the positioning of the vehicular marker lamp on a snow plough.

Figure 2 shows the vehicular marker lamp as seen from the front.
Figure 3 shows the vehicular marker lamp as seen from the side.
5Figure 4 shows a sectional view of the light source as mounted on the frame.
In Figures 1- 4, reference numeral 1 indicates a vehicular marker lamp. Reference numeral 2 indicates a snow plough, and reference numeral 3 indicates its upper 10flange, to which the vehicular marker lamps 1 are secured.
The vehicle driving the snow plough 2 is denoted by numeral 4. The frame of the vehicular marker lamp 1 is indicated by numeral 5, a vertical tube by numeral 6, a horizontal tube by numeral 7, and a base by numeral 8. The 15base 8 is provided with holes 9 for screw fastening.
Reflectors 10 are secured to the vertical tube 6 by means of screws 11. An inner tube 12 manufactured of plastic or a corresponding material is provided within the horizontal tube 7, threads 13 being provided at both ends of the 20inner tube 12 on its outer rim. A glass 15 and a printed circuit board 16 acting as a light source are secured by means of a sleeve 14. The sleeve 14 is provided with a shoulder 17 for securing the printed circuit board 16. For sealing the glass 15, the sleeve 14 is provided with a 25shoulder 18, at the front of which is located an O-ring seal 19, against which the glass 15 rests. Threads 21 are provided on the inner surface of a clamping ring 20, the clamping ring 20 being screwed by means of said threads to -the corresponding threads 13 of the inner tube 12. The clamping ring 20 is provided with a shoulder 22, which presses the glass 15 against the sleeve 14 and seals the structure hermetically by means of the O-ring seal 19. The printed circuit board 16 is sealed with resin 23 or the like to the jacket of the sleeve 14 by pressing it against 35the shoulder 17. The casing of the light source is indicated by numeral 24 and the light-emitting diodes, i.e. LEDS, by numeral 25. The electric wires are denoted by numeral 26. The hole for an electric wire, provided in the vertical tube 6, is indicated by numeral 27.
The vehicular marker lamp of the invention operates in the following manner. The vehicular marker lamp 1 is attached by means of its base 8 with screws through the holes 9 to an object which extends more than is allowed, about half a meter, outwards from a vehicle.
The reflectors 10 act as warning reflectors even when the actual light source is not operating or when it is damaged. The light-emitting diodes, i.e. LEDS 25, acting as the light source are located on the outer rim of the printed circuit board 16, the most even possible light being thus produced. If the light produced by the LEDs 25 is not sufficient, the number of LEDS can be increased by locating a required number of LEDS on the inside of the rim in the middle part of the printed circuit board 16. By placing 8 LEDs on the outer rim and 3 LEDS in a triangle in the middle of the printed circuit board, a desired power and a light pattern are achieved. In order that the light source would not be vulnerable to vibrations or corrosion, the light-emitting diodes 25 are soldered to the printed circuit board 16. The casing 24 is rendered hermetically tight by sealing the printed circuit board 16 by means of the resin 23 to the sleeve 14. The other end of the casing 24 is sealed by means of the glass 15 by pressing it against the O-ring seal 19 by means of the - clamping ring 20. The light casing 24 iS thus hermetically completely tight. The vibration endurance is also improved by a double tube structure, wherein the inner tube 12 is located within the horizontal tube 7. Since the inner tube 12 is manufactured of plastic or a similar material, it endures impact-like stresses and also acts as a damping element, which damps the stresses directed to the light _ 5 source. The electric wire 26 located within the inner tube 12 is passed inside the vertical tube 6 and out of the hole 27 provided therein.
It is apparent that the vehicular marker lamp construction can also be implemented in a manner other than presented in this embodiment. The actual frame 5 can be constructed in another manner. The vertical tube 6 of the frame 5 can be replaced with a profile corresponding to the tube. Other structural modifications can also be implemented within the scope of the inventive idea.

Claims (6)

1. A marker lamp for use in connection with a vehicle, said marker lamp comprising a frame which is provided with a light casing in which are arranged light-emitting diodes secured to a printed circuit board, said light casing being thus arranged as hermetically tight; wherein said frame comprises a double tube section provided with an outer tube manufactured of metal and an inner tube manufactured of plastic or a corresponding material; wherein said light casing is arranged as a sleeve structure which rests against said inner tube; and wherein said light casing is arranged so that a glass covering is tightened in place by means of threads on a clamping ring co-operating with threads on said inner tube.
2. A vehicular marker lamp according to claim 1, characterized in that said inner tube is provided within said outer tube of said frame, a light casing being arranged at both ends of said inner tube; and wherein said outer tube and said inner tube are disposed horizontally.
3. A vehicular marker lamp according to claim 1, characterized in that said inner tube, said sleeve, and said clamping ring are manufactured of plastic or a corresponding flexible material so as to damp impact-like stresses.
4. A vehicular marker lamp according to claim 1, characterized in that said light-emitting diodes are secured to said printed circuit board in such a manner that they form a desired light pattern.
5. A vehicular marker lamp according to claim 1, characterized in that an electric wire used for feeding current to said light-emitting diodes ins encased within said frame.
6. A vehicular marker lamp according to claim 1, characterized in that said light-emitting diodes secured to said printed circuit board are connected in such a manner that variations in voltage do not alter their illuminating power.
