Abstract

ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE

A cutter bit assembly comprises a holder and a cutter bit. The holder is formed with a pocket into which the cutter bit can be inserted. The cutter bit is retained within the pocket by means of an arcuate wedge inserted into a tapered gap formed between respective curved support faces formed on the cutter bit and the holder.

Description

,~ .

This invention relates to a cutter bit assembly, and in particular to a cutter bit assembly for a minexai winning machine such as a coal plough.
A known coal plough cutter bit assembly has a holder defining a pocket in which a shank or ~ody portion of a cutter bit is received. The cutter bit may have a projection which hooks into a recess in an end wall ofthe holder, while the other end of the cutter bit body is held in place by a detachable securing device. The detachable securing device may be a liner which is inserted into a gap between opposed surfaces ~f the cutter bit body and the holder. A known type of liner is constituted by a thin metal plate which is loosely inserted into this gap.
The plate (lin~r) is held in place by, for example, ~
dowel sleeve which is driven through aligned bores in the liner and the cutter bit body. In order to release the cutter bit from the holder, it is first necessary to release the dowel sleeve and to remove the liner. The cutter bit can then be moved forward in the po~Xet a 20 suff icient dis~ance to unhook ~he projection of the cutter bit body from the recess in the end wall of the holder~
Thereafter, the cutter bit can be swung laterally out of the pocket of the holder, the open end of which pocket is directed toward~ the face being won. An assembly of this 25 type is describe~ in DE-PS 1291708. ..

1 ~04i2Ç;

In another known cutter bit of this type, the dowel sleeve is replaced by a locking plate. The locking plate is bent over towards the outer face of the holder (or the cutter bit body~ to hold the liner in place. (See DE-OS 2 355 554) In the known types of cutter bit assembly, the parts of the holder which support the cu~ter bit body undexgo deformation and wear during use~ This is because of the jolting if the cutter bit body against the support faces of the holaer. The wear of the support surfaces of the holder ( and the wear of the associated parts of the cutter bit body) is undssirablel as it results in a loose fit of the cutter bit within the holder.
The aim of the invention is to provide a cutter bit assembly whose cutter bit can be firmly and reliably secured in its holder; and which can, when necessary, be quickly and easily retightened.

The present invention provides a cutter bit assembly comprising a hollow holder defining an open pocket, a cutter-bit having a shank mounted within the pocket and a cutting edge disposed external tv the holder, a gap formed between the shank and an inner face of the pocket over a region of the shank closest in vicinity to the cutting edge of the cutter bit, a rod fi~ed in the pocket in a position opposite to the gap, a tapered detachable locking element fitted in the gap, an aperture in the holder in the vicinity of the gap for permitting ~2~4126 insertion and removal of the locking element and a curved recess in the shank opposite the gap which seats on the rod.
The invention also provides a cutter bit assembl~
comprising a hollow holder defining an open pocket with mutually spaced oppositely disposed first and second interior surfaces, a rod fix~d in the pocket at a position adjacent to and protruding inwardly from said first interior surface, a cutter-bit having a shank with a 10 recess therein, said shank being configured and dimensioned to be received in said pocket with said rod received in said recess and with a tapered gap between the shank and sald second interior surface over a region of the shank closest in vicinity to the cutting edge of the 15 cutter bit, said shank being urged away from said second interior surface and against said rod by a tapered detachable locking element fitted in said gap, and an aperture in the holder through which said locking element may be inserted into andremoved from said gap.
In a preferred embodiment there is provided a cutter bit assembly comprising a holder and a cutter bit, the holder being formed with a pocket into which a shank of the cutter bit i8 mounted, the cutter bit being retained within the pocket against a surface of the holder by means 25 of a detachable locking element received in a gap formed between support faces in the cutter bit shank in the vicinity of a cutting edge of the cutter bit and the ~LZ~26 holder and by means of end portions of the cutter bit and holder remote from said faces which have respective complementary curved support surfaces which engage when the cutter bit shank is fully inserted into the pocket, wherein both the locking element and the gap are tapered in profile, the lockiny element i5 insertable into and removable from the gap via an aperture in the holder and the complementary support surfaces are constituted by a cylindrical rod fixed in the pocket and defining a convex surface and a recess in the cutter bit defilling a concave surf~ce.
The cutter bit support face is conveniently concave and the holder support face convex. The centres of curvature of the two support faces are then offset from one another, so that, when the cutter bit is fully inserted into the pocket, the support faces define a tapered gap into which an arcuate wedge constituting the locking elemant is insertable. Advantageously, the holder support face is formed on a web and the aperturP in the holder is positioned adjacent to the web in such a manner that, when the cutter bit is fully inserted into the pocket, the arcuate wedge can be inserted through said aperture and into the gap between the curved faces.
With the aid of the arcuate wedge, the cutter bit can be firmly clamped within the pocket of the holder.
Moreover, if necessary, it can be retightened during use, this being accomplished by, for example, hammer blows applied to the readily accessible thick end of the wedge ~2Q4~26 The use of the arcuate wedge results in relatively large wedge support faces, so that excessively high specific surface pressures on the wedge and its support faces are avoided.
Advantageously, the curved support face of the holder extends over an arc of at least 130, and preferably between 150 and 170. The arcuate wedge can be designed to be self-locking, so that any movement of the wedge out of the tapered gap cannot occur during use~ Moreover, the 10 arrangement may be such that the clamping force of the wedge is actually increased by the operational forces which tend to force the cutter bit further into the pocket.
In a preferred embodiment, the thin end portion of 15 the arcuate wedge is of reduced cross~section, said reduced cross-section end portion having a thickness which is smaller than the width of the gap formed between the adjacent portions of the support faces when the cutter bit is fully inserted into the pocket. Advantageously, said 20 reduced cross-section end portion of the arcuate wedge is formed with at least one slot terminating at, and extending substantially at right-angles to, the free end of said portion~ This slotted end portion defines thin tongues which can be bent over against the adjacent w~b of 25 the holder to secure the wedge to the holder.
Consequently, a separate locXing member tsuch as a dowel B sleeve or a locking plate) i6 not require~. The reduced ~?4~2~

cross-section of this end portion facilitates the bending over of the tongues.
Preferably, the arcuate wedge extends over an arc which is at least 10 larger than the arc of the curved support face of the holder.
Advantageously, the two ends of the cylindrical rod are held within complementary-shaped aper~ures in the holder. Preferably, the two ends of the cylindrical rod are press-fitted into these apertures and the cylindrical 10 rod is supp~rted by a cylindrical support surface formed in the holder. Conveniently, the holder is made by casting, and the cylindrical rod is made of stainless steel, . .
One form of cutter bit assembly constructed in accordance with the invention, will now be described by way of example, with reference to the accompanying drawings, in which:-Figure 1 is a part-sectional side elevation of a 20 cutter bit assembly constructed in accordance with the invention; and Figure 2 is a plan view of the holder o the assembly of Figure 1.

Referring to ~he drawing~, Figures 1 and 2 show a cutter bit assembly comprising a holder 10 and a cutter bit 11, The cutter bit 11 has a cutting edge 12 which is con~tituted by a hard-metal insert. In a known manner, ~2(~26 the holder 10 can be fitted, either permanently or in a detachable manner, to a coal plough or other winning machine.
The holder 10 is provided with a pocket 13 which~
accommodates a shank or body portion 5 of the cutter bit 11. As illustrated the pocket 13 is open from the top and below, the latter opening being positioned between a base 18 of the holder 10, remote from the open top side of the pocket 13 and a rear wall 14. Side walls 35 define the 10 pocket 13 laterally and join the rear wall 14 to a front wall in the form of a web 17. The web 17 and the base 18 define an end aperture 16, The cutter bit 11 is of plate-like construction, and its shank S is formed with a concave part cylindrical 15 support face 20 at the end thereof remote from the cutting edge 12. When the cutter bit 11 is inserted into the pocket 13, the face 20 engages on a cylindrical rod 33 mounted in the pocket 13~ As illustrated the rod 33 locates in a depression 36 in the end wall 14. The two 20 ends of the rod 33 are fitted in correspondingly-shaped apertures 3~ formed in th~ opposite side walls 35 of the holder 10 and the rod 33 is supported by a concave part-cylindrioal support face provided by the depression 36 formea in the end wall 14''. The support face 20 engages 25 the rod 33 oYer an arc of approximately 160 to 180. In this embodiment, the curved face 20 defines a projection 19 at the base of ~he cuttPr bit shank 5. This projection ~2()4~26 19 engages behind the lower curved portion of the rod 33, thereby preventing the cutter bit 11 from falling out of the holder 10.
The front end of the shank 5 of the cutter bit 1 nearest the cutting edye 12 is provided with a concave recess 22 which defines a support face for an arcuate wedge 23. The rear face 24 of the web 17 defines another support face for the wedge 23 which is convex. The faces 22, 24 define therebetween an arcuate tapered gap and ~he 10 wedge 23 is shaped in a similar manner. The centre point of the ~ace 24 is off-set slightly outwardly with respect to the centre point of the face 22 so as to define this tapered gap which narrows from the aperture 16. The face 24 extends over an arc of about 150~ to 170~. The wedge 15 23 which can be locked into the gap extends over an arc which is approximately 10 to 40 greater than the arc of the face 24. The upper end zone 27 of the wedge 23 is smaller than the rest of the wedge 23and is also provided with an arcuate slot dividing the end zone 27 into two 20 thin tongues 29.
In order to mount the cutter bit 11 within the pocket 13, the cutter bit 11 is introduced from the top to bring the rear reces 20 onto the rod 33 and the f ront of the cutter bit 11 is swung into the pocket 13. The rece~s 20 25 thus hooks around the rod 33. The wedge 23 is then driven in through the aperture 16 to firmly contact the faces 22, 24. This ca~ be achieved by hammer blows on the widest end 30 of the wedge 23. The location of the wedge 23 fixes the cutter bit 11 in the pocket 13. In order to be~ter retain the wedge 23 one of the tongues 29 can be bent back over the exterior of the web 17 as shown in Figure 1. If the cutl:er bit 11 does become loosened, the, wedge 23 can be driven further illtO the gap.definedby the faces 2~, 24 and the other tongue 29 can b~ bent over the web 17.
To release the cutter bit 11, it is necessary to drive the wedge 23 out of the gap in the opposite direction to pass out of the aperture 16. Prior to driving out the wedge 23, the tongue or tongues 29 are lifted out fro~ the bent-over position. The wedge 23 can then be removed by hammer blows on the upper end of the wedge 23 where the tong~es 29 have been straightend.
Alternatively, the lower end region of the wedge 23 can be gripped by a tool and the wedge 23 pulled out of the aperture 16.
The holder 10 is preferably produced by casting, whereas the rod 33 is preferably made of stainless steel.
The rod 33 is, advantageously, arranged to be a press fit within the aperture~ 34.
