Description
~6~i ~P-80~6 -1-BACKGROUND OF THE PRESENT INVENTION
Field of the Invention The present lnvention relates to a mascara applicator havin~ a dual brush arrangement.
~SCRIPTION OF THE PRIOR ART
Rece~tly, in U.S. Patent No. 4,458,~01 to L. Holland, a double bru~h mascara applicator wa~ ~escribed. The mascara applicator of that invention comprised applicator tongs and a two part carrying case with a mascara reservoir incorporated thereln. The double brush tongs were made of a resilient material such that the brush member~ could receive eyelashes therebetween. The brushes were described as being of arcuate form so a to conform to the surfaces of the eyelashes. The applicator shown in this patent had a two-piece h~lder case. The top of the holder case enclosed th~
top portion of ~he tong3 when not in use. The bottom of the holder served as a repo~itory for th~ mascara. Thus, the device was o~ three-piece constructio~, i.e., the top of the holder case, the applicator tongs, and the bottom of the holder case.
SUMMARY OF T~E PR~S~NT INVENTION
The present inventio~ is a ~ore simple dual brush mascara applicator than the device hown in the Holland patent. It compri3e~ only two separate piece~. The first is a reservoir for ghe ~ascara which contains dual side-by-side openin~s to hold the mascara. The seco~d component is a handle which is integrally connec~ed to two applica~ion brushes which are adapted to be placed in the openings of ~Z92~
~P-8046 -2-the reservoir to receive the mascara. The application brushe~ ar~ substantially straight.
DESCRIPTXON OF THE DRA~IN~
The present invention i~ ~urther understood by refer-ence to the Drawing whsrein the Figure i~ a perspective view howing a mascara applicator in accordance with the present invention with the large arrows indicating the relative direction o~ movement of the reservoir and the handle between the position which each component has when the device is about to be used ~as shown in the Drawing) and when it is not in u~e with the handle being ~tored ln ~he reservoir (not shown), DETAILED DESCRIPTION OF THE PRESENT INVENTION
As shown in the s~le F~gure, the mascara appllcator of the present invention co~prises a reservoir 11 and a handle 12 which i integrally connected to two application bru3hes 13a and 13b by bru~h support members l~a and 14b.
The brushes and support members 13 and 14 are bo~h preferably sub3tan~ally ~traight so that both are in substantially parallel ~d~-by-side relationship to one another shown in the Figu~e. The handle 12 iR formed of a resilient material wh~ch allows for inward flexing o~
mem~ers 12a and 12b due to the presence of slot 16 to bring support member~ 14a and ~4b and brushes 13a a~d 13b tQwards one another (as shown by the 3mall arrows in the Figure1 to ~imultaneously apply ~ascara to both urfaces of the eyelash from each brush.
The reservoir for the mascara contains dual side-by-side ope~in~s 15a and 15b whlch are each adapted to hold the mascara within. Preferably, the r~servior consists of two, generally cylindrical barrel portions ~oined together in ~2~2~GS
side-by-side relationship, as shown in the Figure, each barrel portion containin~ an opening 15. In such a configuration, each opening 15a and 15b is a discrete reservoir opening such that neither communicates with the other. This allows for each to contai.n a different type of mascara, if desired, without having such mascara products undes.irably become mixed together with one another in the reservoir member 11. The large arrows shown in the Figure illustrate the direction in which the handle and integrally connected brushes is moved between a position within the reservoir 11 or outside the reservoir 11. The shoulders 16a and 16b on the handle are adapted to sealingly engage the sides of openings 15a and 15b to prevent the mascara from escaping from the reservoir. In addition, the sealing engagement between the handle and the reservoir retards evaporation of the liquid components of the mascara. If desired, the openings 15a and 15b can contain either the same type of mascara or two differing types which are desired to be applied simultaneously to the eyelashes to give pleasing cosmetic appearance thereto. As used herein, the term "mascara" is intended to cover any cosmetic substance which is adapted to be used to color ox otherwise ornament the eyelashes.
It will be appreciated that sealing engagement between the handle and the reservoir can be achieved by providing resilient means on the handle to enter the holes and seal them. Such resilient means could be a resilient material from which the handle is fabricated or other resilient means such as grooves provided with O-rings could be utilizea. If the mascara is a solid or semi-solid composition, the sealing engagement could be provided by a close fit between the handle and the sides o~ the openings in the reservoir. A shoulder on the handle such as shown in the drawing at 16a or 16b provides an area larger than the perimeter of the opening to provide additional sealing assistance.
