Description

<Desc/Clms Page number 2>

LIGHT PROTECTION PRODUCT.
Since it has been known that coloring or pigmentation can also be obtained without producing redness of the skin, attempts have been made to use light protection products which satisfy this condition and which do not. therefore not mainly only allow the short-wave range of ultraviolet light from the sun to pass through, which may affect the skin, but which may be as permeable as possible to the longer-wave range of this radiation. , in which a good browning is still obtained.
The present invention relates to a product for protection against light, which consists of a mixture containing sulfonamides or their soluble salts, this mixture stopping the very short-wave range of ultraviolet light by absorption, diffraction and reflection.
However, this action is not based only on optical tests, but also on biological tests, by which it has been possible to prove that it is possible to obtain with the product in accordance with the invention a stop of the radiation. up to ten doses of erythema, whereas with the products known heretofore only about three doses could be obtained.
For the new light shielding product, particular sulfonamides are suitable substances of the general formula NH2-C6H4-SO2 <R, in which R denotes an organic residue. For this, it is also necessary to mention in particular as examples sodium-sulfonylurea-thiasol and sodium-sulfonamide-pyridine, as well as their soluble salts.
The use of this new product can be done in various ways. As a skin protection product, it can be used, for

example, with advantage clear solution, especially aqueous solution, so that it produces, when applied to the skin a thin invisible crystalline envelope, which stops unwanted radiation by absorption, diffraction or reflection and eliminates in any case its harmful action. However, it is also possible to additionally use an alcoholic solution or other suitable solution of the product. Finally, the sulfonamide may be contained dissolved in a substance of consistent expandable form, the product may, for example, be applied in the manner of a cream or a balm.
Substances of a fatty nature having good adhesive power can also be used as vehicle or support product.
The invention is applicable for the most diverse uses. It is of particular importance for the protection of the skin. But it can also be used also as eye drops, drops of which are put in the eyes before attending the projection of films or carrying out welding work. The new protective product can be made in such a way that it dries under a continuous, completely invisible film layer, which is not felt by the wearer.
By choosing suitable sulfonamides, not only can this layer be absolutely non-irritating, but it can also be bactericidal to a great extent, since some sulfonamides are known to have this property. Mixed with a suitable colourant, the product can be used as a tightly adherent lipstick which at the same time protects against chapped lips.
Other applications of the product of the invention are, for example, the treatment of fabrics or other light-sensitive materials to make them lightfast, obtaining protection of shop windows (which 'avoids the use of yellow filters) and many other applications.
