TO:
The Commissioner of Patents, COMMONWEALTH OF AUSTRALIA.
THIS INVENTION relates to improvements in vehicle hatches.
It is an object of the present invention to provide a hatch for vehicles which provides improved weather sealing between the movable panel and the vehicle body.
¢"pl It is a preferred object to provide a hatch which has an outer frame sealably fixed to the vehicle body and an inner frame which supports the movable 10 panel, where seal means on one frame engage the other Sframe when the hatch is closed.
It is a further preferred object to provide a hatch which can provide a large opening, in the same size aperture, for an emergency exit.
oooooo 15 It is a still further preferred object of the 0 0 oooo present invention to provide a spring-loaded stay for hatches, windows or the like.
0o 0 o Other preferred objects of the present 0 0 invention will become apparent from the following description.
In a broad aspect, the present invention 0 resides in a hatch for a vehicle including: an outer peripheral frame mountable in a hole formed in a vehicle body to receive the hatch, the outer frame including a main member of substantially Lsection having a substantially vertical web to receive or engage a seal and a substantially horizontal foot to engage the vehicle body and a clamping member to secure the main member to the vehicle body; an inner peripheral frame having a first member to support a hatch panel and to engage or receive the seal and a second member to be received within, but spaced from, the main member when the hatch is closed; a hatch panel received within the first member of the inner frame; Li a plurality of handles on the second member of the inner frame to enable the hatch to be opened and closed from the interior of the vehicle; and a cover assembly mounted on the inner face of the vertical web and supporting one end of a j of stays interconnecting the outer and inner frames, the other ends of the stays being connected to c the second member of the inner frame or to the handles.
S Preferably, the cover assembly is releasably C t 10 mounted on the vertical web to enable the cover I assembly, the stays, the inner frame, and the hatch panel to be released from the main member of the outer frame when the hatch panel and/or inner frame are raised externally of the vehicle body to which the hatch is.
oooooo 15 fitted.
0 0 Preferably, the vertical leg has a pair of spaced, universally directed recesses on its inner face 0 ao°° releasably engaged by spaced flanges on the cover assembly, the cover assembly further including a locking tongue on the main member between the two recesses.
oo0o Preferably, each stay includes: 0000 =00000 a tubular body; 0 0 a first mounting means fixed to one end of the tubular body and hingedly mounted on the cover assembly, or on the second member of the inner frame or on one of the handles; a second mounting means having a spigot telescopically received in the other end of the tubular body, the second mounting means being hingedly mounted on the second member of the inner frame or one of the handles, or on the cover assembly, respectively; a compression spring having one end fixed in the tubular body and its other end bearing on, or connected to, the spigot to urge the second mounting means towards an extended position; and -r 2 rC tie means connecting the second mounting means to the tubular body or to the first mounting means to restrain the spigot from release from the body.
To enable the invention to be fully understood, a number of preferred embodiments will now be described with reference to the accompanying drawings, in which: FIG 1 is a part sectional side view of the stay; .0 FIG 2 is a sectional side view through a portion of the hatch; FIG 3 is a side view of the arrangement for

operating and closing the hatch remotely using a pneumatic ram; and FIG. 4 is a sectional side view of a modified hatch which can provide an emergency exit from a vehicle.
Referring now to FIG. 1, the spring-loaded stay 10 has a tubular body 11. A mounting block 12 is fixed in one end of the body and has a lateral extension 13 with a bore 14 therethrough to enable the mounting block to be hingedly mounted e.g. on the outer frame of cCC the hatch.
A second mounting block 15 has a hollow spigot 16 telescopically received in the other end of the o a tubular body. The mounting block 15 also has a lateral extension 17 and bore 18, the lateral extension 17 being directed to the opposite side of the stay relative to the extension 13.
o°o° A compression spring 19 is provided in the 0 aO 0 oo tubular body and is seated on the inner end of a spigot 20 on the mounting block 12, within the tubular body.
So°o, The other end of the spring 19 engages the oo o inner end of the spigot 16 and urges the mounting block towards an extended portion. A tie 21 e.g. of nylon o o00o or metal wire, passes around the tubes passing through oo0000 the mounting blocks 12, 15 surrounding the bores 14, 18 and aligned with the extensions 13, 17 to limit the extension of the mounting block 15 so that the spigot 16 is retained in the tubular body.
The end faces 22, 23 of the wounting block 12, 30 15 are convergent to respective noses 24, 25 to provide a camming action against any face or stay on the inner or outer faces of the hatch.
Referring now to FIG. 2, the hatch 30 has an outer frame 31 and an inner frame 32, with a glass or plastic panel 33. (A second panel 34 may also be 4 1 1. I o"300 o0 0 o 0 0o 0 0 00 o o 0 000 Do o o oo 0 00 0 00 000 0 0 0 0 00 ooo0 o o o e mounted in the inner frame e.g. for insulation.) The outer frame 31 has a main member formed of an aluminium extrusion which extends peripherally within a hole formed in the roof 36 of the vehicle. The roof has a frame structure 37 and inner and outer skins 38, 39. The main member 35 is of substantially L-shape in cross-section and has a horizontal peripheral foot 40 which is sealed to the outer skin 38 by e.g. polyurethane tape 41. A vertical leg 42 is surmounted by a socket assembly 43 which retains a rubber balloon seal 44.
A clamping member 45, of substantially Lsection, has a foot 46 which engages the inner skin 39 and a leg 48 which overlies a web 49 extending downardly from the foot, 40 of the main member 35. Screws secure theA e= member 45 to an elongate recess 51 in a formation 52 at the lower end of the web 49. A strip 53 encloses the screws.
The inner frame 32 has a first peripheral 20 member 54 which has a flange 55 which overlies the leg 42 of the main member and a foot 56 which engages the seal 44 to seal the inner and outer frames when the hatch is closed. A sealing strip 57 is received in a socket 58 to sealably secure the panel 33 in the inner frame.
A second peripheral member 59, of inverted Lsection, has a flange 60 received in a socket 61 in the first member 54 and is fixed by screws (not shown). The second panel 34 may be bonded or fixed in a recess 62 in the flange A substantially V-shaped handle 63, moulded of plastics, is fixed to the lower end of the web 64 of the second peripheral member.
As indicated in dashed lines, the stay assemblies 10 interconnect the leg 42 of the main member of the outer frame 31 to the handle 63 on the second peripheral member 59 of the inner frame 32. (If preferred, the stay assemblies 10 may interconnect at the leg 42 to the second peripheral member 59.) A cover 70 for the stay assemblies has a base 71 with a lip 72 received in a recess 73 and a top 74 abutting the socket assembly 43. A flexible torque on the outer wall 76 engages a recess 77 under the socket assembly 43.
Referring now to FIG 3, a pneumatic ram 80 may be connected to a pair of the stay assemblies 10 to enable the hatch to be opened and closed remotely. In the figure, one stay assembly (10a) is shown in the hatch open position, the other (10b) in the hatch closed .1 0 15 position.
The ram 80 is floating and has a pair of piston rods 81 with blocks 82 which are pivotally o connected to arms 83 on the tubular bodies 11 of the stay assemblies. As the ram is extended, the stays are swung outwardly and upwardly to an over-centre position where the hatch is raised and opened. When the arm is retracted, the hatch is closed.
Referring now to FIG 4, the hatch 90 can be provided as an emergency exit from the vehicle to which it is fitted.
The outer frame 91 has a main member 92 of similar configuration to the main member 35 and is retrained in the hole (ie. 36) in the roof of the vehicle by a clamping member 93. A recess 94 on the inner face of the main member 92 is defined by a flange and a recess 96 defined by flange 97 (adjacent the rubber balloon seal 98).
The cover assembly 99 for the stays has a base unit 99a and this unit has side flanges 100, 101 received in the recesses 94, 96, enabling the cover assembly 99 and the stays to be lifted out in a single unit when the inner frame 102 and the hatch panel 103 i- -L are lifted to provide emergency access to the interior of the vehicle. The base unit 99a is retained by a series of locking units 99b hingedly mounted thereon via a ball-on-socket type hinge 99c.
In the embodiment shown, only a single hatch panel 103 is shown, although it will be readily apparent to the skilled addressee that the hatch 90 may be double glazed, as in FIG. 2.
The inner frame 102 has a modified first peripheral member 104, compared to the corresponding .oo.o 0 member 54 in hatch 30, in that external peripheral 0oo recess or channel 105 provides a finger grip to enable °o the hatch 90 to be opened externally of the vehicle e.g.
o 00 after a collision.
0 0 0 o0 0 15 The second peripheral member 106, and inteLnal o o handles 107, are arranged generally as for their equivalent components 59, 63 in the embodiment of FIG.
o oo 2.
00 0 Qo o The hatch 90 can be opened and closed manually 20 via the handles 107, or via the pneumatic ram 80, as o 0000 hereinbefore described with reference to the embodiment- 000 0 of FIG. 2. However, should the vehicle be involved in a collision and e.g. roll on its side, emergency teams can o oo open the hatch and release it from the vehicle after opening the hatch externally.
The emergency workers lift the hatch panel by engaging their fingers in the recess 105 and pulling the hatch panel up against the stays 10 until the latter are in their raised position. The peripheral locking flange and panels 108 on the outer face of the cover assembly can be released from the locking tongue 109 in the main member 92 by pushing the locking units 99b downwardly causing them to pivot relative to the base unit 99a. On further pulling the hatch panel upwardly, the base unit 99a, and thereby the cover 99 is released from the main 7 member 92 of the outer frame. The flanges 100, 101 are pulled free from the recesses 94, 96.
It will be readily apparent to the skilled addressee that the emergency opening in the roof of the vehicle will be defined by the inner face of the main member 92 and clamping member 93, which is much larger than the opening defined by the handles 63 at each end, and the inner faces of the second peripheral member 59 on each side, where only the panels 33, 34 are pushed out of the hatch 50 in an emergency. Therefore, for a oCO. given aperture in the roof, the hatch 90 provides a much o greater emergency exit. The locking units 99b, being hingedly mounted on the base unit 99a, allows the hatch o e to be selectively released from the vehicle.
L
o IE The embodiments described are by way of o illustrative examples only and various changes and modifications may be made thereto without departing from oOoC the scope of the present invention as defined in the o Oc 0 cc appended claims.
