Abstract
The package is made of a wound flat flexible material and sealed along a longitudinal seam. The flexible material contains at least one layer of a monoaxially oriented plastic film, the orientation direction of which extends in the circumferential direction of the package. Tearing notches may be provided in order to allow the tearing force to act in a targeted and particularly effective manner. <IMAGE>

Complete Specification for the invention entitled: CONE-SHAPED PACK The following statement is a full description of this invention including the best method of performing it known to me:- I c- 1 I I illL i Cone-shaped pack BACKGROUND OF THE INVENTION 00 0 0 00 s o o 0 e0 0 0o o 00 o0 0 o &o 0 00 1 00 O 0 0 00 0 0 jldB The invention relates to a cone-shaped pack which is wound from a flat blank made of a fLexibLe material and is closed along a Longitudinal seam.
Such packs are used very frequentLy for ice cream cones, at Least part of the pack having to be removed to eat the ice cream and the wafer cone that contains it. Since the pack tears in an at Least unsightLy way when it is opened, the pack is generaLly removed completeLy. There are, however, disadvantages to this, as the wafer cones are not tight in many cases, so that the ice cream can Leak out when it meLts. Apart from this, complete removal of the pack is unhygienic as there is direct contact with the product that is to be eaten. It wouLd be extremenLy inconvenient to remove the pack completely when the product, for exampLe, has S a chocoLate coating, as the chocoLate meLts when heLd in the Shand.
SUMMARY OF THE INVENTION The purpose of the present invention is to create a cone-shaped pack of the above kind, with which it is possibLe to remove parts of the pack without experiencing the disadvantages outlined above.
I- -i I3 The way the present invention achieves this purpose is to include at Least one Layer in the flexibLe materiaL that consists of a monoaxiaLLy oriented pLastic fiLm, the orientation direction of which is roughLy identicaL with the direction of the pack circumference.
Due to the monoaxiaL orientation of the pLastic film, the pack can be torn open with a tidy tear line that foLLows the orientation of the fiLm.
EP-A-0169563 discLoses a cone-shaped pack, but this pack is wound from stiff board and has a tear strip that is Limited by two cut Lines. Su:ch a design is neither possibLe nor practicaL with the flexibLe materiaL used in the present invention.
It is very advantageous in accordance with the invention if at Least one tear notch is provided on the section of the bLank that is on the outside when the Longitudinal seam is formed.
YI
This has the effect that the tear force is appLied in concentrated form at one end of the tear Line provided.
This initiaL application of the tear force can be made particuLarLy easiLy if in accordance with the invention a tab projects from the section of the bLank that is on the outside when the LongitudinaL seam is formed.
If in accordance with a particuLarLy advantageous embodiment of the invention the tear notch is provided at the end of the projecting tab that is cLoser to the point of the pack, the top section of the pack to which the tab is connected is removed by taking hold of the tab and tearing the pack open, whiLe the pointed end of the pack is not removed.
It can, however, also be provided in accordance with the invention that the tab only extends aLong a Limited section of the Longitudinal seam and that a tear notch is provided on each side of the tab.
4 A pack designed in this way is particularly easy to open, as the tear force is concentrated on both tear notches at once and the strip Located between them is removed completeLy uniformly.
It is an advantageous embodiment of the invention when the bond strength of the longitudinal seam is reduced in the area of the pack which is to be removed.
The effects of this are firstly to facilitate the initial tearing of the section that is to be removed and secondly to simplify very considerably the final tearing off of this section.
This is because the section being removed has to be torn off from underneath the longitudinal seam of the section of the pack that is not removed. Although this would also be possible without reducing the bond strength of the Longitudinal seam, appreciably more force would have to be applied to do so. In addition to this, it is then also easy to remove the top section of the pack once the strip has been torn off.
4 i t It is a further great advantage if in accordance with the S invention a triangular section is cut out at the en^ of at least S the tear line that is closer to the point of the pack and if the tear notch on this tear line is also triangular in shape.
Without this triangular shape, unsightly points would be left projecting upwards at both ends of the tear line after the pack has been torn open.
BRIEF DESCRIPTION OF THE INVENTION The drawing shows two embodiments of the invention.
Fig. 1 is a side view of a cone-shaped pack, Fig. 2 is a flat blank for producing a pack shown in Fig. 1 and Fig. 3 shows a further flat blank.
DETAILED DESCRIPTION OF THE INVENTION 1 in Fig. 1 is a cone-shaped pack, which is wound from the flat blank 2 shown in Fig. 2. The pack 1 is cLosed along a longitudinal seam 3 and is made of a flexible material containing at Least one layer that consists of a monoaxially oriented plastic film.
The following material combination (from outside to inside) was chosen for a pack for ice cream: paper 70 g/m2 alu foil 12 microns PPF 35 microns The combination for another appLication was as follows: alu foil 7 microns So paper 60 g/m2 PPF 35 microns o Q° In both cases the outer layer the paper and the alu foil respectively was printed and given a Lacquer coating.
The monoaxially oriented plastic film can be made from one ,of the following materials: polyethylene polypropylene polyamide polyethylene terephthalate polyvinyl chloride polystyrene polycarbonate.
although this List could be continued; the only point of importance I; is that the plastic film can be oriented monoaxially and tears easily afterwards.
The appropriate film and the other Layers of the Laminate are chosen according to the purpose to which the pack will be put. Combinations of several plastic films are aLso conceivable, so that transparent packs can be produced as well.
The thickness of the monoaxially oriented plastic fiLm is in the 10 to 300 microns range and is determined by the requirements of the product that is to be packaged as well as by the other Layers of the Laminate.
The monoaxially oriented plastic fiLm can also be Located between the other layers of the Laminate. It is made sure here that the orientation direction of the plastic film is roughly identical with the direction of the pack circumference. This is achieved by die-cutting the blank from the web of material in such a way that the film orientation corresponds to the orientation lines 4 shown in Fig. 2. Two tear notches 5, which make it relatively easy to initiate the tearing operation, are cut from the section of the bLank that is on the outside when the longitudinaL seam 3 is produced.
In the case of the embodiment shown in Fig. 3 a tab projects from the section of the blank 12 that is on the outside when the longitudinal seam 3 is formed, which facilitates initiation of the tearing operation further. Two tear notches 5 are provided here as well.
The tear force is directed into the pack via the two tear notches simultaneously in both these embodiments. This means that the section located between the tear notches is torn out along the Lines of dashes 6 and 7 shown in Fig. 1, as a result of which the section of the pack above it can be removed too. It is, however, also possibLe to provide just one tear notch and, perhaps, 7 a tab that extends to the top of the pack. When the pack is torn open, the whole of the section above this tear notch is then removed.
The bond strength of the upper section 9 of the Longitudi al seam enclosed by the lines of dots and dashes indicated in Fig. 1 can be reduced so as to facilitate the tearing operation and the removal of the top section of the pack.
All of the embodiments shown have a triangular section 8 cut out from the opposite end of the lower tear Line 6 from the tear notch 5. Points that project upwards in the area of the Longitudinal seam and would prove bothersome when the ice cream or wafer cone are eaten are avoided as a result.
