AUSTRALIA Patents Act 1990 COMPLETE SPECIFICATION Standard Patent Applicant: Aristocrat Technologies Australia Pty Limited Invention Title: A GAMING SYSTEM AND A METHOD OF GAMING The following statement is a full description of this invention, including the best method for performing it known to me/us: -2 Title A GAMING SYSTEM AND A METHOD OF GAMING 5 Related Application This application is a divisional application of Australian application no. 2008207354, the disclosure of which is incorporated herein by reference. 10 Field The present invention relates to a gaming system, a method of gaming, a game controller and computer program code. 15 Background to the Invention It is known to provide a gaming system which has a game controller arranged to randomly display several symbols 20 from a predetermined set of symbols and to determine a game outcome such as a game win based on the displayed symbols. Such gaming systems may commonly be implemented as a stepper machine provided with reels with each reel carrying several symbols of the set, or a video machine 25 wherein selected symbols are displayed on virtual reels on a video display. While such gaming systems provide users with enjoyment, a need exists for alternative gaming systems in order to 30 maintain or increase player enjoyment. Detailed Description 5 The embodiment provides a gaming system where a player obtains an entitlement to an initial number of available game rounds. Each game round, symbols are selected. The current number of game rounds is adjusted based on whether the selected symbols include a designated symbol until an 10 end condition is met. One end condition is that the current number of game rounds reaches a designated value e.g. zero. The gaming system may be provided in a number of different forms. 15 3336510_1 (GHManers) P72429 AU2 26/07/1l - 11. In a first form, a stand alone gaming machine is provided wherein all or most components required for implementing the game are present in a player operable gaming machine. 5 In a second form, a distributed architecture is provided wherein some of the components required for implementing the game are present in a player operable gaming machine and some of the components required for implementing the game are located remotely relative to the gaming machine. 10 For example, a "thick client" architecture may be used wherein part of the game is executed on a player operable gaming machine and part of the game is executed remotely, such as by a gaming server; or a "thin client" architecture may be used wherein most of the game is 15 executed remotely such as by a gaming server and a player operable gaming machine is used only to display audible and/or visible gaming information to the player and receive gaming inputs from the player. 20 However, it will be understood that other arrangements are envisaged. For example, an architecture may be provided wherein a gaming machine is networked to a gaming server and the respective functions of the gaming machine and the gaming server are selectively modifiable. For example, 25 the gaming system may operate in stand alone gaming machine mode, "thick client" mode or "thin client" mode depending on the game being played, operating conditions, and so on. Other variations will be apparent to persons skilled in the art. 30 Irrespective of the form, the gaming system has several core components. At the broadest level, the core components are a player interface 50 and a game controller 60 as illustrated in Figure 1. Components of the player interface may vary from embodiment to embodiment but will typically include a 5 credit mechanism 52 to enable a player to input credits and receive payouts, one or more displays 54 and a game play mechanism 56 that enables a player to input game play instructions. 10 The game controller 60 is in data communication with the player interface and typically includes a processor 62 that processes the game play instructions in accordance with game play rules and outputs game play outcomes to the display. Typically, the game play instructions are stored 15 as program code in a memory 64 but can also be hardwired. Herein the term "processor" is used to refer generically to any device that can process game play instructions in accordance with game play rules and may include: a microprocessor, microcontroller, programmable logic device 20 or other computational device, a general purpose computer (e.g. a PC) or a server. A gaming system in the form of a stand alone gaming machine 10 is illustrated in Figure 2. The gaming machine 25 10 includes a console 12 having a display 14 on which is displayed representations of a game 16 that can be played by a player. A mid-trim 20 of the gaming machine 10 houses a bank of buttons 22 for enabling a player to interact with the gaming machine, in particular during 30 game play. The mid-trim 20 also houses a credit input mechanism 24 which in this example includes a coin input chute 24A and a bill collector 24B. Other credit input mechanisms may also be employed, for example, a card reader for reading a smart card, debit card or credit 35 card. A player marketing module may be provided having a reading device for the purpose of reading a player tracking device, for example as part of a loyalty program. 2753859_1 (GiMatters) P72429AU.2 26/07/I 1 - 13 The player tracking device may be in the form of a card, flash drive or any other portable storage medium capable of being read by the reading device. 5 A top box 26 may carry artwork 28, including for example pay tables and details of bonus awards and other information or images relating to the game. Further artwork and/or information may be provided on a front panel 29 of the console 12. A coin tray 30 is mounted 10 beneath the front panel 29 for dispensing cash payouts from the gaming machine 10. The display 14 shown in Figure 2 is in the form of a video display unit, particularly a cathode ray tube screen 15 device. Alternatively, the display 14 may be a liquid crystal display, plasma screen, any other suitable video display unit, or the visible portion of an electromechanical device. The top box 26 may also include a display, for example a video display unit, which may be 20 of the same type as the display 14, or of a different type. Figure 3 shows a block diagram of operative components of a typical gaming machine which may be the same as or 25 different to the gaming machine of Figure 2. The gaming machine 100 includes a game controller 101 having a processor 102. Instructions and data-to control operation of the processor 102 are stored in a memory 103, 30 which is in data communication with the processor 102. Typically, the gaming machine 100 will include both volatile and non-volatile memory and more than one of each type of memory, with such memories being collectively represented by the memory 103. 35 The gaming machine has hardware meters 104 for purposes including ensuring regulatory compliance and monitoring 27538591 (GHMatters) P72429.AU2 26/07/11 - 14 player credit, an input/output (I/O) interface 105 for communicating with peripheral devices of the gaming machine 100. The input/output interface 105 and/or the peripheral devices may be intelligent devices with their 5 own memory for storing associated instructions and data for use with the input/output interface or the peripheral devices. A random number generator module 113 generates random numbers for use by the processor 102. Persons skilled in the art will appreciate that the reference to 10 random numbers includes pseudo-random numbers. In the example shown in Figure 3, a player interface 120 includes peripheral devices that communicate with the game controller 101 including one or more displays 106, a touch 15 screen 107, a card and/or ticket reader 108, a printer 109, a bill acceptor and/or coin input mechanism 110 and a coin output mechanism 111. Additional hardware may be included as part of the gaming machine 100, or hardware may be omitted as required for the specific 20 implementation. In addition, the gaming machine 100 may include a communications interface, for example a network card 112. The network card may, for example, send status 25 information, accounting information or other information to a central controller, server or database and receive data or commands from the central controller, server or database. 30 Figure 4 shows a block diagram of the main components of an exemplary memory 103. The memory 103 includes RAM 103A, EPROM 103B and a mass storage device 103C. The RAM 103A typically temporarily holds program files for execution by the processor 102 and related data. The 35 EPROM 103B may be a boot ROM device and/or may contain some system or game related code. The mass storage device 103C is typically used to store game programs, the 2753859_1 (GHatters) P72429.AU.2 26/07/1I - 15 integrity of which may be verified and/or authenticated by the processor 102 using protected code from the EPROM 103B or elsewhere. 5 It is also possible for the operative components of the gaming machine 100 to be distributed, for example input/output devices 106,107,108,109,110,111 to be provided remotely from the game controller 101. 10 Figure 5 shows a gaming system 200 in accordance with an alternative embodiment. The gaming system 200 includes a network 201, which for example may be an Ethernet network. Gaming machines 202, shown arranged in three banks 203 of two gaming machines 202 in Figure 5, are connected to the 15 network 201. The gaming machines 202 provide a player operable interface and may be the same as the gaming machines 10,100 shown in Figures 2 and 3, or may have simplified functionality depending on the requirements for implementing game play. While banks 203 of two gaming 20 machines are illustrated in Figure 5, banks of one, three or more gaming machines are also envisaged. One or more displays 204 may also be connected to the network 201. The displays 204 may, for example, be 25 associated with one or more banks 203 of gaming machines. The displays 204 may be used to display representations associated with game play on the gaming machines 202, and/or used to display other representations, for example promotional or informational material. 30 In a thick client embodiment, game server 205 implements part of the game played by a player using a gaming machine 202 and the gaming machine 202 implements part of the game. With this embodiment, as both the game server and 35 the gaming device implement part of the game, they collectively provide a game controller. In a thin client embodiment, game server 205 implements most or all of the game played by a player using a gaming 10 machine 202 and the gaming machine 202 essentially provides only the player interface. With this embodiment, the game server 205 provides the game controller. The gaming machine will receive player instructions, pass these to the game server which will process them and 15 return game play outcomes to the gaming machine for display. In a thin client embodiment, the gaming machines could be computer terminals, e.g. PCs running software that provides a player interface operable using standard computer input and output components. 20 Servers are also typically provided to assist in the administration of the gaming network 200, including for example a gaming floor management server 208, and a licensing server 209 to monitor the use of licenses 25 relating to particular games. An administrator terminal 210 is provided to allow an administrator to run the network 201 and the devices connected to the network. The gaming network 200 may communicate with other gaming 30 systems, other local networks, for example a corporate network, and/or a wide area network such as the Internet, for example through a firewall 211. Persons skilled in the art will appreciate that in 35 accordance with known techniques, functionality at theserver side of the network may be distributed over a plurality of different computers. For example, the game server 205 could run a random generator engine. Alternatively, a separate random number generator server 5 could be provided. Further, persons skilled in the art will appreciate that a plurality of games servers could be provided to run different games or a single game server may run a plurality of different games as required by the terminals. 10 Gaming systems for implementing games that involve a display of spinning reels as part of the display of the outcome of a game have either a video display or a mechanical display, these later machines most usually 15 being "stepper" machines which have a separate motor for each reel. In some implementations the game controllers of such gaming machines select symbols by employing a stop 20 determining function that randomly determines the stop position for each reel. For example, if there are five reels, each having twenty symbols, the stop determining function might determine that the stop positions are positions: 3, 13, 7, 9 and 17. The spinning of the reels 25 is then controlled so that each symbol comes to a stop in the same row, typically a predetermined row in a "window" visible to the player on the display that which corresponds to a player playing a single win line. When a reel stops, the symbols will be in one of a plurality of 30 possible symbol positions for that reel relative to the stop position which constitutes a game outcome. Embodiments of the present invention relate to gaming systems that allow a player to select how many win lines 35 of a plurality of win lines they will play in each game i.e. a minimum of one win line up to the maximum number of win lines allowed by the game. That is, a predetermined symbol position of each reel is assigned to a win line. The symbol positions that constitute each of the win lines are s usually advertised to the player by markings on the display or diagrams showing the symbol positions that correspond to each win line. However, other techniques are known for establishing the basis on which symbols are evaluated. One technique is found in so-called Reel Power 10 games, where a player selects a number of reels to be played and combinations of symbol positions in the display window are evaluated based on the selected reels. The selection of a reel means that each symbol of the reel can be substituted for a symbol at one or more designated 15 display positions. In this embodiment, the modules are implemented as software stored in memory 64 and executed by the processor. Persons skilled in the art will appreciate that in other embodiments, one or more of 35 the modules may be implemented on a different processor, for example, the random number generator may be implemented on a random number generator server. In Figure 6, an entitlement module 625 determines whether s a player is entitled to participate in the game in accordance with known rules. In the embodiment, the game is implemented as a feature game which is triggered during play of a game. However, 10 the game need not be implemented as a feature game. The player's eligibility for the feature game can be determined in accordance with any one of a number of known rules including but not limited to: being available at the player's discretion; 15 being available to all players for all bets; being available in free games; being available only for certain bet types; or different numbers of game rounds being available. 20 The feature game can commence in accordance with any one of a number of known triggering rules including but not limited to: when a special symbol, or a combination of symbols appears in the window; 25 when a time elapses; when a system event occurs; when an underlying random event occurs, for example, in the course of a game; when a turnover has elapsed. 30 Once the feature game commences, an end condition module 624 monitors the number of game rounds based on game round data 644 and end condition data 645. Claims (36)
1. A method of gaming carried out by a game controller in a gaming system comprising: s (a) conducting a game round in which a plurality of symbols are selected using a random number generator and caused to be displayed at respective ones of a plurality of display positions on a display of the gaming system; 10 (b) determining a current number of available game rounds based at least on whether or not the selected symbols include at least one designated symbol subsequent to the symbol selection of the game round, wherein if selected, the at least one designated symbol remains in 15 the respective display position for subsequent game rounds; (c) repeating steps (a) and (b) until an end condition is met, wherein there are one or more end conditions and at least one end condition is that the 20 current number of available game rounds is determined to be an end value; (d) determining a first prize value to be awarded based on the number of designated symbols based on the number of designated symbols remaining in the respective 25 display positions; (e) determining a second prize value to be awarded upon the designated symbols remaining in the respective display positions also forming a designated winning pattern; and 30 (f) awarding the first prize value and any second prize value for the game round.
2. A method as claimed in claim 1, wherein the end value is zero. 35
3. A method as claimed in claim 1 or claim 2, comprising reducing the number of available game rounds by 33365101 (GHMatters)P72429.AU.2 26/07/11 - 27 one if the selected symbols of a game round include no designated symbols.
4. A method as claimed in any one of claims 1 to 3 5 comprising awarding an entitlement to an initial number of available game rounds.

6. A method as claimed in claim 4 or claim 5, wherein determining the current number of available game rounds comprises setting the current number to the initial number if the selected symbols include at least one 15 designated symbol.
7. A method as claimed in any one of claims 1 to 5, wherein determining the current number of available game rounds comprises not altering the number of available game 20 rounds if the selected symbols include at least one designated symbol.
8. A method as claimed in claim 1 to 5, wherein determining the current number of available game rounds 25 comprises reducing the number of available game rounds by a first value if the selected symbols include at least one designated symbol, and reducing the number of available game rounds by a second value greater than the first value if the selected symbols do not include any designated 30 symbols.
9. A method as claimed in any one of claims 1 to 8, wherein there are at least two end conditions, and an end condition is that a designated number of designated 35 symbols is reached.

11. A game controller for a gaming system, the game controller arranged to: 5 (a) conduct a game round in which a plurality of symbols are selected using a random number generator and displayed at respective ones of a plurality of display positions on a display of the gaming system; (b) determine a current number of available io game rounds based at least on whether or not the selected symbols include at least one designated symbol subsequent to the symbol selection of the game round, wherein if selected, the at least one designated symbol remains in the respective display position for subsequent game 15 rounds; (c) repeat (a) and (b) until an end condition is met, wherein there are one or more end conditions and at least one end condition is that the current number of available game rounds is determined to be an end value; 20 (d) determine a first prize value to be awarded based on the number of designated symbols based on the number of designated symbols remaining in the respective display positions; (e) determine a second prize value to be awarded 25 upon the designated symbols remaining in the respective display positions also forming a designated winning pattern; and (f) award the first prize value and any second prize value for the game round. 30
12. A game controller as claimed in claim 11, comprising an available game round module arranged to determine the current number of available game rounds. 35

19. A game controller as claimed in claim 16 or claim 17, the game controller arranged to determine the current number of available game rounds by not altering the number of available game rounds if the selected symbols include at least one designated symbol. 30

21. A game controller as claimed in any one of claims 11 to 20, wherein there are at least two end conditions, 5 and an end condition is that a designated number of designated symbols is reached.

A gaming system comprising: a player interface comprising a display for displaying game outcomes; and a game controller arranged to: 15 (a) conduct a game round in which a plurality of symbols are selected using a random number generator and displayed at respective ones of a plurality of display positions on a display of the gaming system; (b) determine a current number of available 20 game rounds based at least on whether or not the selected symbols include at least one designated symbol subsequent to the symbol selection of the game round, wherein if selected, the at least one designated symbol remains in the respective display position for subsequent game 25 rounds; (c) repeat (a) and (b) until an end condition is met, wherein there are one or more end conditions and at least one end condition is that the current number of available game rounds is determined to be an end value; 30 (d) determine a first prize value to be awarded based on the number of designated symbols based on the number of designated symbols remaining in the respective display positions; (e) determine a second prize value to be awarded 35 upon the designated symbols remaining in the respective display positions also forming a designated winning pattern; and 33365101 (GHMatters) P72429 AU.2 26/07/11 - 31 (f) award the first prize value and any second prize value for the game round.

33. A gaming system as claimed in any one of claims 15 23 to 32, wherein there are at least two end conditions, and an end condition is that a designated number of designated symbols is reached.
