Abstract

A replacement share tip for an agricultural share, wherein otherwise damaged or eroded agricultural shares may be fitted with the replacement tip to extend their usable life. The replacement tip share comprising a first portion having a forward face formed with a forward facing groove arranged to receive a wear resistant portion in a close abutting contact, and an upper portion arranged to engage a suitably prepared body of an agricultural share.

Description

AUSTRALIA PATENTS ACT 1990 COMPLETE SPECIFICATION FOR AN INNOVATION PATENT (Original) APPLICATION NO: LODGED: COMPLETE SPECIFICATION LODGED: ACCEPTED: PUBLISHED: RELATED ART: NAME OF APPLICANT: Henry Frank Jarvis ACTUAL INVENTOR: Henry Frank Jarvis ADDRESS FOR SERVICE: LORD AND COMPANY, Patent and Trade Mark Attorneys, of 4 Douro Place, West Perth, Western Australia, 6005, AUSTRALIA. INVENTION TITLE: "REPLACEMENT SHARES" The following Statement is a full description of this invention including the best method of performing it known to me/us: TITLE "REPLACEMENT SHARES" [0001] The present invention relates to a replacement tip for an agricultural share. [0002] It is common for agricultural shares to have a limited life. Abrasive wear from frictional contact with the ground is a major cause of failure of the tip of an agricultural share. In addition, damage may occur to the share through the striking of hard objects such as rocks buried in the ground. [0003] Agricultural shares are often treated to increase their wear resistance. However, once a wear resistance portions is damaged or dislodged the remaining portion of the tip of the agricultural share rapidly abrades causing failure. [0004] Previous agricultural shares once abraded required replacement resulting in downtime in terms of machinery or poorer crop yields through the inefficient turning over of soil. [0005] The present invention attempts to overcome at least in part the aforementioned disadvantages of previous agricultural shares [0006] In accordance with one aspect of the present invention there is provided a replacement tip for an agricultural share comprising a first portion having a forward face formed with a forward facing groove arranged to receive a wear resistant portion in a close abutting contact, and an upper portion arranged to engage a suitably prepared body 2 of an agricultural share wherein the body of the agricultural share also comprises a forwardly facing groove, such that the wear resistant portion is arranged to prevent excessive wear of a join between the replacement tip and the body of the agricultural share. [0007] The present invention will now be described, by way of example, with reference to the accompanying drawings, in which: Figure 1 is a replacement tip for an agricultural share of the present invention. Figure 2 is shows a replacement tip of the present invention arranged to engage an agricultural share. Figure 3 is shows a replacement tip of the present invention combined with an agricultural share. [0008] In Figure 1 there is shown a replacement tip 10 for an agricultural share comprising a first portion 12 having a front face 14 formed with a forwardly facing groove 16. The replacement tip 10 further comprises opposing sides 20 (only one of which is visible). Arranged into each opposing sides 20 is a respective recess 22. The first portion further comprises an upper portion 26 [0009] Figure 2 shows the replacement tip 10 for an agricultural share arranged to engage with an agricultural share 26. The agricultural share 26 has been prepared to receive the replacement tip 10 by having worn portions removed at the line A - A. [0010] The groove 16 is arranged to receive at least one wear resistant wear portion in 3 the form of a wear plate resistant plate 18A rear section of a first wear resistant plate 18 is of complementary shape to the groove 16. Thus, the wear resistant plate 18 can be arranged into the groove 16 adjacent a lower end of the groove 16. As shown in Figure31 the wear resistant plate 18 engages with the groove 16 in such manner that a front face of the wear plate 18 projects forwardly. [0011] The first portion 12 further comprises opposed sides 20. Each side (only one of which can be seen) may, as shown in Figure 3, be provided with a recess 22 arranged to receive a wear resistant member 24. The wear resistant member 24 may be in the form of a triangular prism and the corresponding recess 22 may be V-shaped. Whilst the groove 16 and recess 22 are shown in the accompanying drawings with a triangular profile it is to be understood that the shape of the groove 16 and the recess 22 may be of any shape complementary to the wear resistant plate 18 or member 24. [0012] The wear resistant members 24 preferably comprise an abrasive resistant material, such as a bead of hard face material such as tungsten carbide or more preferably a block of tungsten alloy of a composition designed to give enhanced wear resistance. The wear resistant members 24 reinforce the sides 20 of the replacement tip 10 and reduce a tendency of the sides 20 to wear away preferentially in use when the replacement tip 10 is used in conjunction with abrasive soil. Preferably, the wear resistant portions 24 stand proud of the side faces 20 of the first portion 12. [0013] The replacement tip 10 of the present invention maybe affixed to the agricultural share 26 through welding or brazing the replacement tip 10 to a body 30 of the share 26. 4 [0014] The wear resistant plates and members 18 and 24 are preferably formed of tungsten alloy. The tungsten alloy may contain a minor proportion of cobalt such as between 5 and 15% by weight. [0015] In use, once an agricultural share 26 is worn and is not sufficient to fulfill its function it is removed from the agricultural tine it is attached to and prepared to have a replacement tip 10 fitted. Worn shares are prepared to have a replacement tip fitted by first undergoing a cleaning process and having residual material removed. Residual (worn) material is removed to the line A-A (see Figure 2) such that the lower portion 32 of the worn share is complementary in shape with the upper portion 26 of the replacement tip 10. [0016] The upper portion 26 of the replacement tip 10 is brought into close abutting contact with the lower portion 32 of the share 26. The replacement tip 10 is then affixed by either brazing or welding the replacement tip to the worn share along the line A-A. [0017] Once the replacement tip 10 and the worn share 26 are affixed together the groove 16 on the front face of the replacement share may be extended along a front face 28 of the body 30 of the worn share 26. [0018] Wear resistant portions 18 may then be affixed to the combined body of the share along the front face of the body. Wear resistant portions 18 are particularly arranged to extend over the welding or brazing line at A-A so as to protect the weld or 5 braze from abrasion. [0019] The replacement tip 10 may further comprise additional wear resistant portions 24 arranged to engage opposing side walls of the replacement tip 10. The wear resistant portions are arranged where soil is likely to collapse in on the replacement tip in use. [0020] Modifications and variations as would be apparent to a skilled addressee are deemed to be within the scope of the present invention. 6
