Abstract

In an aerobic process for waste water (effluent) purification with intermittent batch feed of the waste water to the activated sludge tank from which the treated waste water is discharged continuously, the nitrate content of the waste water is simultaneously reduced by the aeration of the activated sludge tank, commencing with the flow of the waste water to the tank, being restricted to values corresponding to </= 0.5 mg/1 of dissolved oxygen, or in particular turned off, until the nitrate content in the tank has fallen below 5 mg/1 or, in particular, below l mg/1. In such treatment of communal waste waters, an approximately 1 hour cycle time is advantageous and the aeration, commencing with the rapid input of the waste water charge, is turned off for about 5 minutes. Suitable feed batches are </= 30% and, in particular, between about 5 and 20% of the tank contents. In this process, the nitrate content is reduced during the phase with oxygen restriction, while in the subsequent phase (over longer periods of time), the ammonium carried in with the waste water feed is converted into nitrate, it being advantageous to provide for an adequate nitric bacteria population in the tank. <IMAGE>
