Abstract

Disclosed is a hot water system (80) comprising a water storage tank (14), an instantaneous-type water heater (12), a first pump (84), a second pump (100), a solar panel (98) and a controller (42). The storage tank (14) has first (92) and second inlets (110) and first (94), second (116) and third (24) outlets. The instantaneous-type water heater (12) has an inlet (18), in fluid communication with the first outlet (94) of the tank (14), and an outlet (20). The water heater (12) is adapted to energise in response to a flow of water through the water heater (12). The first pump (84) has an inlet (86), in fluid communication with the outlet (20) of the water heater (12), and an outlet (90), in fluid communication with the first inlet (92) of the tank (14). The second pump (100) has an inlet (114) in fluid communication with the mains water supply (26) and the second outlet (116) of the tank (14), and an outlet (102). The solar panel (98) has an inlet (104) in fluid communication with the outlet (102) of the second pump (100) and an outlet (108) in fluid communication the second inlet (110) of the tank (14). The controller (42) is adapted to selectively energise the first (84) and/or the second pump (100) and cause water to circulate between the water heater (12) and the tank (14) and/or between the at least one solar panel (98) and the tank (14) respectively.
