Abstract

The machine dispenses and applies self-adhesive labels detached from a carrier strip, the latter being accommodated in a roll and pulled over a deflector edge where the label is peeled off. Between the roll (12) and the tensioner (17) is a speed increasing gear with slipping clutch. As a label is peeled off, the tensioner winds in a longer section of the strip, without the clutch slipping, then runs off the roll. The force necessary to cause slippage keeps the strip taut. The tensioner may be a winding roller, and the roll can be a hollow cylinder, rotating freely on a shaft coupled to the speed increasing gear. The clutch acts between shaft and cylinder by means of friction linings.
