Abstract
An interlacing arrangement is provided for two pieces of cardboard. The arrangement comprises at least one fin 19 projecting from a part, the front portion 20 whose fin 19 bends back around a fold line 23 of waisted section. The front portion 20 has portions 21 projecting laterally and inserted through an opening 27 cut in the other piece of cardboard. The side projections 21 pass through the opening and then tend to jump upward to prevent removal. The tip of the front portion 20 remains retained by the cutout opening thereby ensuring that the flap 19 remains of double thickness when engaged in the opening
Description
"CARTON INTERLOCATION PROVISION"
This invention relates to interlocking arrangements between two pieces of cardboard. In particular,
but not exclusively, the invention relates to these arrangements for securing the ends of a cardboard sleeve around an article or articles. In accordance with the present invention, an interlacing arrangement is provided for
! "" "*;" connecting two pieces of cardboard comprising at least one fin projecting from one of the pieces for cooperation with at least one respective opening in the second piece, the or each fin has a front portion farther from the rest of a piece of cardboard, behind
whose front portion is a portion projecting laterally in at least one direction, the or each fin being bent such that the front portion and the laterally projecting portion are folded back over the remainder of the fin, the flap then during use 0 is inserted in its area or bent opening areas associated first, such that when the portion projecting laterally passes through the opening, it adopts a clear position of the edge of the opening, avoiding This way the removal while the front portion 5 remains retained by the opening. This interlacing arrangement can be generally flat relative to the cardboard pieces. Preferably, each fin has portions projecting laterally in both directions, having the
fins a notched section immediately behind the projecting portions, in which the flap is folded back along a straight line. In the preferred embodiments, the opening comprises a single cut having two ends. r "f With the dispositions selected, the laterally projecting portions are placed at an angle towards the waist and towards the front portion, and the maximum width through the laterally projecting portions of each wing is essentially dual
than the maximum width of the associated opening. A preferred feature is that the cut ends of the aperture are angled in a manner corresponding to the angled formation when they are folded backward from the portions projecting laterally towards the front portion. Preferably, the fins are dimensioned in such a way that it is not possible to have an over-insertion in such a way that the front portions clear the edges of the openings.
In certain embodiments, the two pieces of cardboard are constituted by ends of a sleeve wrapped to contain one or more articles. Preferably two or more of the fins are provided at one end of the sleeve, and two or more of these openings are provided at the other end of the sleeve. A preferred feature is that the ends of the openings are aligned in the fold line such that the free end portion of the sleeve is articulated around the fold to aid insertion of the fins. Another particularity is that the fold comprises two end sections joined by a cut in the shape of
"C" extending away from the front portion of the
flap so that when it is folded back, a flap projects forward of the fold line. The embodiments of the present invention will now be described in greater detail. The description refers to the accompanying drawings, in which: Figure 1 shows a blank model for a cardboard box incorporating an interlacing arrangement in accordance with the present invention, Figures 2a and 2b show views of perspective end of the interlacing arrangement of Figure 1, before and after the connection, Figure 3 is a partial sectional plan view of an assembled interlacing arrangement, Figure 4 is a schematic end view of the arrangement of assembled interlacing of Figure 3Figure 5 shows a blank model for a cardboard box incorporating another interlacing arrangement in accordance with the present invention, and Figures 6a and 6b show perspective end views of the interlacing arrangement of Figure 5, before and after the connection. In Figures 1 to 4, a blank model 10 is shown to form a cardboard box similar to a sleeve for retaining three articles. The blank model 10 has an upper part 11, main side panels 12, side side panels 13, a first base panel 14 and a second base panel 15. The cutouts 16 are provided for positioning the tops of the articles and the recesses 17 are provided for placing the bottoms of the articles. These features are well known in the manufacture of cardboard boxes. The first base panel 14 is articulately connected to its side panel 13 associated by means 5 of a fold 18 connecting the ends of the recesses 17. The base panel 14 is formed with three projecting fins 19 each having a portion thereof. 20 front. Immediately behind, that is, on the side closest to the recesses 17, are the portions 27 projecting laterally which are angled laterally outwardly at 22 from a section 23 in the form of a fold. Behind the waist, at 24, the flap again flares laterally towards the wider portions of flap 19. The widest portions are
just farther from the waist 23 than the widest portions of the portions 21 projecting laterally, but are of similar lateral width. The second base panel 15 has an additional interdispersal fold 26 with three openings 27 in the cut shape 0. The openings 27 are positioned in positions corresponding to the positions of the fins 19 in the first base panel 14 when the blank model 10 is bent to make the carton. The side ends 28 of each opening 27 are angled toward the free edge 29 of the base panel 15 in the inward direction and then the central portion 30 of the opening returns to the imaginary continuation of the fold 26. The lateral width of the openings are just arginally larger than the width of the portions 21 extending laterally of the fins 19. The connection of the interlacing arrangement will now be described. For reasons of convenience, the connection of only one flap 19 / opening 27 will be written. The first step is to place the two panels 14, 15 of the base one towards the other. The front portion and the laterally projecting portions of the fin 19 are folded up and back in the rest of the fin, around the fold 23 of the waist. Also, the end of the second base panel 15 is folded up slightly
around the fold 26 thereby widening the opening 27. The flap 19, the fold 23 first is then inserted through the opening 27. The portions 25 are
- -, just able to pass through the opening 27 and when they have cleared the ends 28 at an opening angle
27, tend to jump upward thereby preventing removal of the flap 19 relative to the opening 27 because the front edges are now oriented rearwardly of the laterally projecting portions 25 which engage the angled ends 28. of the
. At the same time, the central portion 30 of the opening is positioned in such a way that the front portion 20 of the fin 19 does not clear the opening 27 since it remains retained below the second base panel 15. Further insertion of the flap is not possible because the ends of the openings 27 couple the broader portions 25 of the flap 19 and its connection to the rest of the base panel 14. When the arrangement is completely intertwined, the entanglement is usually flat.
'? This interlacing, therefore, is particularly suitable for use with articles or flat bottomed containers, but can be used for other articles or containers. In the alternative version shown in Figures 5 and 6, most of the characteristics are the same as
those in Figures 1 to 4 and therefore have been provided with the same reference numbers. The main difference is that the hinge 23 of the waist on the flap 19 is not continuous, but has a "C" shaped cut 50 which is made centrally between the two end folds 51. When the front portion 20 is bent backward, the tongue 52 within the "C" shaped cut 50 projects forward of the folds 51 of the hinge. When the flap 19 interconnects with the opening 27, the tongue 52 remains projecting toward the front. The retained article at the location of the tab 52 tends to be pressed downward on the tab thereby tending to facilitate that the laterally projecting portions 21 are further lifted to reinforce the engagement with the ends 28 of the opening 27. it will appreciate that the configurations and dimensions discussed above are examples of appropriate arrangements. Other package sizes are of course equally appropriate and it is also possible that the f -r. L-? Interlacing could be provided in any cardboard article and not necessarily multiple cardboard boxes for packaging.
