I am the Associate Dean of Education and Student Experience and Associate Professor of Applied Linguistics at the University of Nottingham Ningbo China, as well as the Director of the Language and Pedagogy Laboratory there. I serve as Deputy President of the International Hallidayan Linguistics Association, and as a Visiting Professor at Sun Yat-Sen University, as well as being the past Chair of the International Systemic Functional Linguistics Association. My interests are in the intersections of grammar, meaning, and culture, although I am also active in critical pedagogy, especially as it pertains to the second-language classroom. My most recent work is on the role of grammar in cross-linguistic lexical movement and linguistic aspects of inter-cultural classroom practice, as well as technological interventions for pedagogical practice, including VR, AR and AI.

The results presented here serve to frame teaching contest discourse in a fuller contextual configuration and will help contest sponsors, participants, and audience members better understand this popular social event and its relations to real-world teaching practices, while simultaneously helping teachers to understand the relevance of such contest practice. Moreover, the research methods will benefit those linguists who are interested in researching other types of event discourses.
