The TV series was the second in the "Super Dimension" series (after Macross and before Southern Cross), but other than the descriptive name, the three series were not connected to each other. After Macross (1982), Nobuo Ishiguro returned as director. It was animated by Artland and TMS Entertainment.
It was not localized as part of Robotech like Southern Cross and Macross were. Instead, the anime Genesis Climber Mospeada was used as the third part of Robotech.

The TV series is the third in the Super Dimensions series, following Macross (1982) and Orguss (1983). Unlike the previous two series, Southern Cross was created and produced almost entirely by Tatsunoko Productions. For various reasons, it was unable to replicate the success of the previous two shows and was canceled after only 23 episodes.
It was adapted into Robotech: The Masters as part of the Robotech series. Scenes from this series would later be used in Robotech: The Movie.
