Synopsis

In the town of Kurouzu-cho, Kirie Goshima lives a fairly normal life with her family. As she walks to the train station one day to meet her boyfriend, Shuuichi Saito, she sees his father staring at a snail shell in an alley. Thinking nothing of it, she mentions the incident to Shuuichi, who says that his father has been acting weird lately. Shuuichi reveals his rising desire to leave the town with Kirie, saying that the town is infected with spirals.

But his father's obsession with the shape soon proves deadly, beginning a chain of horrific and unexplainable events that causes the residents of Kurouzu-cho to spiral into madness.

THE GOOD:
Most of the ideas you'll find in this work are nothing short of phenomenal. The obscure and eldritch entity that haunts the town, and the way it affects its citizens... it's sometimes as mind-boggling as the horrors you could find in Lovecraft's works.
The art is on par with those ideas: detailed and realistic, it really makes you feel the pain, the anguish, the fear the characters are experiencing.

THE MEH:
Ito might be a good horror mangaka, but he's not a good storyteller. The breakdown of each chapter is effective, but when they are read one after the other they usually don't work well, unless they ...

Mixed Feelings
I wasn't really interested in reading this, but a review recommended reading this before watching the anime, and I'm glad I did.

§ Overview

The story starts with Goshima Kirie going on her way until she finds her boyfriend's father observing something. This bloke has been obsessed with spirals. Kirie's boyfriend, Saitou Shuuichi, feels something is amiss in this town, which he calls the curse of the spiral. Eventually, his father dies and a series of horrors plague this town.

§ Remarks

It starts as an agonising read until it hooks you. The so-called horror starts out as creepy, i.e. strange phenomena happen, until several chapters later, you're ...

I heard so many good things about Uzumaki before finally deciding to read it.
I had high expectations for this book, but I was so disappointed.

All of the characters are unlikable, bland, irrational, or complete weirdoes. This ensures that no tension can ever be built, because I absolutely do not care what happens to any of them. The best example is a character towards the beginning of the story who becomes increasingly obsessed with spirals. His family becomes concerned and we watch him spiral into madness. Props for thematic storytelling. I was initially invested in this plot thread ...
