Although Nanashi and Rarou are revealed to be foreigners, the backstory and details of their origins are never fully revealed and is left rather ambiguous. What do you think? Rarou definitely looks to be of Northern European descent. Nanashi is a bit harder to classify. I think he may originally hail from the British Isles due to his Olive skin tone and Red hair.

I also think he may be british, since he wrote in English on that board he left at the old man's house.

Id say Rarou is Tocharian. This seems a bit weird because they were pretty much extinct by the beginning of Ming dynasty. Well I guess not all diseappeared just like *pooomf*, nothing. Some maybe could survive to XIV century...

I always thought Nanashi was a mix of things - maybe Portuguese or Ainu. But not one thing.

My best bet for Luolang is Russian, or at least Slav. He looks it more Eastern than Western European in a movie where there was an obvious effort to define ethnicity. Plus, Bones has a bit of a history with adding Russian details to things - primarily Wolf's Rain, which even though it shares few if any of the same crew, it has some interesting parallels with, and Fullmetal Alchemist 03. So it seems likely that it would be likely that they continue with this.

Î don't know why I thought it was written in english back then. I think I only noticed the fansubs and then it just cut to Kotaro saying Nanashi had horrible writing. I noticed the actual thing when I rewatched the movie, but by then I already forgot I left that comment.

Oh, I figured you may have watched a localized version in which the board had actually been edited to be in English, since that is fairly common practice. :) Sometimes you can't trust anything on screen!
