Television broadcast company TBS opened an official website for a television anime adaptation of Tadashi Kubou's Mizu Zokusei no Mahoutsukai Daiichibu (The Water Magician) light novel on Friday, revealing the main cast, staff, teaser visual (pictured), and first promotional video. The anime is scheduled to premiere on TBS in July 2025.

Cast
Ryou: Ayumu Murase (Mairimashita! Iruma-kun)
Abel: Kazuki Ura (Blue Lock)
Sera: Kaede Hondo (Majo no Tabitabi)

Staff
Director: Hideyuki Satake (Dungeon Meshi assistant director)
Series Composition: Jun Kumagai (Shouwa Genroku Rakugo Shinjuu)
Character Design: Haruka Otsuzumi (Kumo desu ga, Nani ka? animation director)
Studio: Typhoon Graphics, WonderLand

Kubou began writing the adventure fantasy novel on the Shousetsuka ni Narou website in April 2020. TO Books published the first part, Chuuou Shokoku-hen (The Central Provinces Arc), in seven volumes between March 2021 and July 2023. The second part, Seihou Shokoku-hen (Western Provinces Arc), began in October that year. The fifth volume will go on sale on January 15.

The first two volumes of Chuuou Shokoku-hen featured illustrations by Nokito, with volumes three to six featuring illustrations by Mebaru. Hana Amano (Yuusha, Yamemasu) took over the illustrations beginning volume seven and Seihou Shokoku-hen onward.

J-Novel Club licensed the light novel and manga in English in November 2023. The light novel's third volume was released on December 17 and the manga's third volume is scheduled to go on sale on January 15.

Synopsis
Ryou is delighted to be reincarnated into the fantastical world of Phi, where he thinks he'll get to live a quiet life learning to use his newfound water magic. Going with the flow here, however, means something very different. Ryou is immediately pitted against the wild lands he winds up in and the slew of deadly monsters that call the remote subcontinent home. You'd think he'd forget about taking it easy when he's stuck fighting for his life, but lucky for Ryou, he's naturally optimistic, clever, and blessed with the hidden "Eternal Youth" trait. Twenty years pass in the blink of an eye, and each encounter along the way pushes him one step closer to the pinnacle of human magic. Little does he realize that's only the opening chapter of his tale. A fateful meeting soon thrusts Ryou to the forefront of history, forever changing the course of his life... Thus begins the adventures of the strongest water magician the world has ever seen—who also likes to do things at his own pace! (Source: J-Novel Club)

I'm so happy to see the industry continue to embrace creativity, boundry pushing and risk taking by constantly ABSUING the European magic/fantasy world setting and forgetting other parts of the world with unique stories and cultures which could likely lead to new trends and genres exist

The water magic at the end of the teaser there looked great. At the very least, looking forward to the water sakuga compilations made from this.

@EcchiGodMamster Is this a problem? This is literally a classic and standard fantasy setting. No more and no less. With the same logic, you can complain that 99% of rom-coms take place in Japan. Honestly, this feels like just complaining for the sake of complaining because you personally don't like European fantasy.
