Pokok belian merupakan sejenis pokok kayu keras dengan nama saintifik Eusideroxylon zwageri.[1] Ia merupakan pokok yang lambat tumbuh membesar dan bukan dipterokarpa. Pokok ini dapat ditemui secara alami di kawasan Borneo, Flores, Jawa dan Kepulauan Sulu.[2] Pokok ini dikenali dengan kayunya yang tahan lasak, dan banyak digunkan dalam pembinaan struktur.

Kayu belian tahan secara semulajadi disebabkan ciri-ciri anatomi uniknya dan kandungan hasilan yang tinggi. Kayunya mampu tahan dedahan kepada tanah dan keadaan lain tanpa kehilangan kekuatan yang jelas. Beberapa tiang eletrik belian yang diuji di Sarawak menunjukkan hanya pereputan permukaan pada garis tanah selepas 20 tahun. Ujian menggunakan mikroskop elektron menunjukkan kehadiran rongga reput lembut pada dinding serat. Tambahan pada serangan reput lembut pada dinding kedua, pada beberapa tisu reput, bahagian lain dinding serat, termasuk lamela tengah berlignin, turut terurai. Bakteria juga turut banyak terdapat pada sel ini, mencadangkan penguraian tisu kayu pada permukaan mungkin hasil tindakan bersama fungi pereputan lembut dan bakteria pengurai kayu.[3]

Dengan daya tahan yang elok terhadap serangan mikroorganisma dan serangga, kayu belian banyak diberi perhatian dalam pembinaan struktur luaran. Di samping itu, ketumpatan kayu yang tinggi serta sifat kayu yang mudah dikerjakan juga menjadikannya pilihan dalam struktur marin seperti pembinaan jeti dan kapal seperti kapal layar pinisi.[4] Selain itu, kayu belian juga digunakan untuk menghasilkan azimat, barangan kemas dan senjata peribumi.

Ancaman spesies

Pokok ini terancam berikutan kehilangan habitat akibat eksploitasi berlebihan, kekurangan pertumbuhan sempurna serta kesukaran penanaman.[5] Pengeksportan kayu belian telah diharamkan dalam perundangan Indonesia dan Sarawak, tetapi penyeludupan haram masih berlaku.[6]
