Architectural Marvel of Odegal Basadi...

The first temple you encounter as soon as you enter the first fort of Vidhyagiri hill is Odegal Basadi. Odegal meaning support stones, the temple stands completely with the support of the stones arranged at an angle to the raised temple platform. Its a great architectural marvel, to construct a temple of its kind decades back.

The temple said be built in 10th century by Chamundaraya, is a thrikuta basadi, with three sanctums  dedicated to Adhinatha, Shanthinatha and Neminatha Thirthankara. Like in any Hoysala temple, the mahamadapa which houses the three sanctum has a raised circular platform at the centre with pillars around. These circular platforms in Hoysala temples were used by Shantala, queen of Hoysala king Vishnuvardhana to dance with devotion in front of the lord.

The Lesser Known Hoysala Temple - Lakshmi Devi Temple, Doddagaddavalli

On our day trip to the lesser known Hoysala Temples in Hassan district, after Koravangala and Mosale, we had lunch in Hassan and headed to Doddagaddavalli. Doddagaddavalli is off Hassan-Belur road. We reached the temple by around 4, by then the care taker/guide was about to leave. But he opened the temple for us and guided. While he told, since it was a week day there were no much visitors, watchman is there 24 hours and he opens the temple for visitors in his absence(till 5/6PM).

There are 92 Hoysala temples in Karnataka. These temples are known to be Ekakuta, Dwikuta, Thrikuta, Chatushkuta and Panchkuta, depending on the number of shrines and towers. Lakshmi Devi temple in Doddagaddavalli is a Chatushkuta temple, with four shrines and towers, also are four towers at the four corners of the temple compound. Each gopura(tower) has the kalasha and Hoysala crest at the top.

The temple is said to be built in the year 1114 A.D, by Kallahana Rahutha(from Kolhapur, Maharastra), a wealthy merchant in Hoysala court. The place was called Abhinava Kolhapura, connecting it with Kolhapur. The main deity of the temple is Kali also called Aadhi Shakthi, Maha Shakthi, in polite mood, so called SoumyaKali. At the foot of the goddess is the demon Shumbha Nishumbha, the goddess is said to be in her polite mood after killing the demon.

There is SaptaMatrike(7 forms of Goddess)on the top of the door, and Nagakanye and Vishakanye(maids of Goddess) on either side of the door. Guarding the sanctum are Bhuta and Preta, very rare sculptures in skeleton form, found no where else.

Opposite to the sanctum(facing the Kali idol)is the shrine of Kalabhairaveshwara(a form of Lord Shiva), while we were told, there was a Vishnu idol previously, which was stolen and then a small idol of Kalabhairaveshwara was placed at its place. The platform has Garuda(Vishnu's vahana/vehicle).
Other deity in the temple include, Mahalakshmi(to the left of sanctum), which resemble the Mahalakshmi idol, at Mahalakshmi temple of Kolhapur. And its a very rare sculpture of goddess Lakshmi in standing posture, while goddess Lakshmi is mostly found in sitting posture. The goddess here hold Shankha, Chakra, Gadha, Hasta, while most Lakshmi idols are found to be holding Lotus.

And to the right of the sanctum is Boothanatheshwara, in the form of Shiva Linga. So its believed that you can't worship the lord, by laying down, as you have idols of god and goddess on all four directions and worshiping the lord by laying down, will point your toes to one of the idols.

There is a small opening at the back of the temple compound, which opens to the lake. It was locked and we didn't get to reach the water.
Driving Direction:
Doddagaddavalli is around 18kms from Hassan off Hassan-Belur Road. After driving around 15km, there is a Karnataka State Tourism board on the left hand side. Take that route, you cross two or three small villages, Chikkagaddavalli and others, drive through to reach Doddagaddavalli. You need to drive through the narrow lanes of the village, ask for directions from the locals, they will guide you. The temple is just next to a lake, and the road ends just at the gate of the temple. You can connect your visit to Doddagaddavalli, while planning Belur( if you are planning in private vehicle). There are Karnataka State Road Transport buses from Hassan too, but very limited.

The Lesser Known Hoysala Temple - Nageshwara and Channakeshava Temples, Mosale

On my series on "The lesser known Hoysala Temples", here is the second temple at Mosale, in Hassan district. The temple looks very much like the Bucheshwara temple of Korvangala. Said to be built in 1200 AD, the twin temples here are dedicated to Nageshwara(one of the forms of lord Shiva) and Channakeshava(a form of Vishnu).

The Lesser known Hoysala Temple - Bucheshwara Temple, Korvangala

Hoysalas ruled most of Karnataka, spread over the fertile areas on the bank of Kaveri river. Halebidu and Belur being the capital of the empire still remain the important and well known places of Hoysala dynasty. There are lot of other Hoysala temples, which go untouched and unexplored. In my recent trip to Hassan, we went on a tour of such temples, in Hassan district.

Koodli, Tunga-Bhadra Sangama

Koodli is a small village in Shimoga District. This is the place where rivers Tunga and Bhadra meet, and then on flow together as Tungabhadra. Hence the name Koodali, which means meet in Kannada. A small temple with nandi denotes the exact point where the two rivers meet, and is considered to be sacred.
As we entered the place a priest asked us to perform special worship to the river, which we ignored and enjoyed the beauty. Just like in any Sangama, due to death rituals performed here, there are so many people behind you demanding bakshish(money).
At the sangama is a 12th century Rameshwara temple and Narasimha temple built in Hoysala style.

Koodli has Smartha Monastery, stated to have been found in 16th century by Jagadguru Narsimha Bharathi Swamigalu of Sringeri. Within the premises of the matt are the shrines of Sharadamba and Shankaracharya. Koodli is also known as Varanasi of the south, it is home to Rushyashrama, Brahmeshwara, Narasimha and Rameshwara temples.
Koodli is 15kms from Shimoga and is accessible by road.

Halebidu

We always linked our trip to Belur with Halebidu as it is 15 kms away.
In 12th Century the Hoysalas moved their capital from Belur to Halebidu. This place was known as Dwara Samudra, the wealthy capital of Hoysalas. During this period Ketamala built the  Hoysaleshwara temple. The temple complex comprises of Hoysaleshwara temple, Kedareshwara temple and two Jain Temples. Just like Belur it is the home to the best examples of Hoysala Architecture.

The walls of the temple are covered with endless variety of depictions from Hindu mythology, animals, birds and dancing figures. Yet no two sculptures of the temple are the same.

As per Hindu Mythology bull serves as the mount (vahana) of Lord Shiva and as the gate keeper of Shiva and Parvati. Temples venerating Shiva display images of a seated Nandi, facing main shrine. As Hoysaleshwara and Kedareshwara temples are dedicated to Lord Shiva, there are two Monolithic statues of Nandi (Bull) on the sides of both the temples.

Shantala Devi queen of King Vishnuvardhana was a follower of Jainism. It is said that King Vishnuvardhana too was originally a Jaina but converted to Sri Vaishanavism due to the influence of Ramanuja-charya, the great Sri Vaishnava teacher. Shantala Devi built two Jain Temples in Halebidu. It is said that in the temples built by Shantala Devi, are polished stone platform where she danced in praise of Lord.
