Google's 8-bit Maps

Google released an 8-bit map "upgrade" this past weekend as an April Fool's joke. This upgrade was done to support the Nintendo Entertainment System as explained in the Google LatLong blog - the video at this link is pretty funny.

Here are some examples of our 8-bit fantasy-like world:

The lower Great Lakes with the important places like Aurora and West Virginia emphasized.

Westminster, London - zoom in to get cute building icons.

The pixellated coast of New Orleans

Yellowstone and vicinity

Sydney.

Occasionally you will come across a game character like this guy near Scranton. If I was more into gaming I might know who this is.

Here's the googleplex area with its dinosaur and flamingoes. There's probably a joke or two here for those in the know.

If you zoom all the way to street view, the images are posterized for your fantasy viewing pleasure:

Unfinishtstan-A Kitchen Wall in Edinburgh

Collins Geo, formerly Bartholomew (whose World Atlas I featured in a previous post), has a map blog. On that blog there's a "Map of the Month." They sent me this month's map, a rendering of imaginary countries on a kitchen wall. The map's boundaries and features have been determined by an uneven plastering job. Click the map for the story, map details, pinxits, Badley Smooved Mountains and an enlarged image of this "wall map."

Map of the Week 122-Those Postcard Maps That You Love So Much

When I was a youngster we spent some time down in Houston where I picked up a postcard similar to this one, a Texas-sized ego trip for the locals. I probably still have the card buried under a pile of junk in the office but sometimes it's easier to find things online than under your junk. I recently discovered Card Cow and found a similar postcard in their maps section. Anyway if you're looking for one of those vintage map postcards there's lots of good stuff on their site.

By the way, I think my Texas card had a little extension to the Atlantic Ocean so they could border the US on 4 sides.

Also note the Colorado/Wyoming switcheroo-oh well who can tell those rectangles apart anyway?

Map of the Week #103 - Transit Maps of the World

My in-laws gave me a real nice Hanukkah gift - Mark Ovenden' s "Transit Maps of the World". This book is described by boingboing as "sheer subway porn". The map below is from the inside cover and shows a fanciful map, based on Harry Beck's famous London Underground maps linking all of the World's transit systems. Imagine a quick ride on the red line to Istanbul or Shanghai or with one switch at Newark, an easy ride to Vancouver, Buffalo or Ufa! OK, I better stop before I get too excited.

MOTW #44

Ever wondered about the geography of Springfield? Not the one in Illinois, the one in the Simpsons of course. Here's your map.
