How to use the milk FRESH sensors
How to store breastmilk the milk FRESH way
We recommend the use of milk storage bags for the MilkFresh sensors. They may also be used on baby bottles or food-grade containers. Please note the sensor can only be used one time and the adhesive may leave a mark when you wash them. For milk stored in the fridge, it’s best to store at the bottom of the refrigerator, not in the door. When freezing, leave an inch of space at the top of the container because breast milk expands as it freezes. Milk can be stored in an insulated cooler bag with ice packs for up to 24 hours when you are traveling. For accurate freshness tracking, remember to add and scan the sensor at the point it is first contained and not when you return home
How to use the milk FRESH app
The app should be used to:
- Add a new bag
- Check the freshness
- Manage your inventory
How to add a new bag:
Once you have activated and added a sensor to a new bag of breastmilk, use your phone’s camera to scan the QR code. This will direct you to the MilkFresh app, tap ‘Add a Bag’ and follow the prompts to enter:
- The volume of milk in the new bag
- Any notes you wish to add
The time and date will be automatically logged. This may be edited if required. Once the new bag details are logged in your inventory you will see the ID number (linked to the number on the sensor), the information you entered, the number of days of shelf life remaining and the best-before date.
How to check the freshness
To check the freshness in the app, tap ‘Check Bag’ then scan the sensor. A blue check mark will confirm if the milk is still fresh and safe for your baby to drink. You can scan the sensor as often as you like to check the freshness. To accurately track the freshness, we recommend you scan the sensor when you add a new bag and again before placing it in a fridge or freezer, if time has lapsed in the interim. During this time the surrounding temperature may have changed.
How to manage the inventory
Every bag will be added to your inventory when you ‘add a bag’ in the app. Each sensor has an ID number which is logged, so when the time comes to use a stored bag, you can identify the oldest bag to use. We recommend to always use the bag with the least remaining days. When you are ready to use a bag, scan the QR code to check its freshness. Then, in the app, select if you are going to use the entire bag. If so, select to remove this bag from the inventory’ to update your records.
Što i ne treba:
Carefully peel the blue tab and remove the middle layer of the sensor and then firmly press the top layer and bottom layer together to activate the sensor properly. Do not remove the top layer. The sensor will start to track milk’s freshness only once it is properly activated. It is important to scan the QR code as soon as you place it on the bag or bottle. Do not remove the sensor and apply it to a different container. This will invalidate the freshness tracking. To get accurate results, make sure to scan the sensor immediately after the sensor is activated.
To thaw frozen milk, we advise you follow the CDC Guidelines:
- Thaw milk overnight in the refrigerator.
- Never submerge the sensor underwater to thaw.
- Always remove the sensor before contact with water.
- Never thaw or heat milk in a microwave.
- Use milk within 24 hours of thawing in the refrigerator (from the time it is completely thawed, not from the time when you take it out of the freezer).
- Use thawed milk within 2 hours of bringing it to room temperature or warming.
- Nikada nemojte ponovo zamrzavati odmrznuto mleko.
Please consult the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention website www.cdc.gov for further information on the safe thawing of breastmilk.
FAQs
How do the sensors work?
The sensors track the time and temperature of breastmilk in real-time. Time and temperature are the two variants that impact the freshness of milk. By using your phone camera to scan the sensor you can instantly read the freshness level of the milk and its remaining shelf life.
Can I use the sensors on milk I express at work or on-the-go?
Yes, we recommend you add a sensor to every fresh bag of breastmilk. We also advise you to rescan it before you place it in a fridge or freezer if you have transported it since first applying the sensor. This is because exposure to different temperatures during transportation can affect the predicted freshness.
When should I scan the sensor’s QR code?
You should scan the sensor’s QR code at the point of adding a new bag and again before placing in fridge or freezer for an accurate shelf-life estimate. You should also scan before you use the milk to check if it is still fresh.
How often should I scan the QR code?
You can scan the sensor as often as you like to check the freshness of the milk. For accurate tracking, please scan it when you add a new bag and again after transporting it, before placing it in the fridge or freezer.
